Community Paediatrician prior to SALT/Nursery jumping the gun?

Hi, looking for some advice. My son has just turned 3 and isn't talking yet. He has many individual words however doesn't use them consistently or put them together. He talks constantly but in his own little language. I feel he has an understanding of language and can follow instruction. He has great eye contact and is very affectionate. He is an only child and not often around other kids. He will start nursery in a couple of months which I hope will bring his development on. His health visitor made a referral to speech and language and also the community paediatrician just incase we needed it down the line as the waiting lists are long. My concern is we have our appointment through for community paeds but he has yet to see SALT or have the opportunity to thrive within a nursery setting. I was hoping by the time he was assessed by a paediatrician that I would have the opinion of a nursery key worker and SALT. I don't want any premature labels. I suppose I am still holding onto the hope he is just a late talker and his speech will come on once he's been in nursery for a while. Any advice on whether I should delay the paeds appointment and give my son time to development within the right environment and have some salt input first?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had a late talker too. I think you've been extremely lucky to get referred so early and to have an appointment come through so quickly.

You would not have got the referral unless your DS was already displaying significant signs of ASD. Try to look at it as not labelling, it will help up to you and later him who you choose to tell.

You might want to had on over to the SN Children Section and ask in there about getting an ECHP, how you can help him with his Speech & Language and what to expect at the appointment.

Just for context it took us 12 years longer than you just to get a referral.

I think it might be worth also asking your HV if there is a local support group for Parents with SN Children and if there are any SN Playgroups or Nurseries.
