My daughter is two, and for the past two weeks, according to her keyworker at nursery, has napped without a dummy every day she's there and never asks for it.
At home is a different story, she only uses it for sleep, I don't let her have it when she's up and about and awake. She sometimes asks for it when she's in her buggy or the car seat.
Nap time and bed time she won't go down without it. In fact she has several, one in her mouth and then she caresses one in each hand and will swap them between hands and her mouth, this is how she gets to sleep.
The other day I tried to nap her without any dummies but she cried and cried for one and I gave in, it had been a long morning and I was desperate for a break.
Her speech and comprehension are very good so she would understand what I mean if I said bye dummies, in the bin, no more, but I know she wouldn't take it well.
When's the best time to just go cold turkey ? She sleeps so brilliantly through the night, 7.30 / 8pm to 7am every time unless poorly or teething, my husband and I work full time so are wondering when is best to plan a night of interrupted sleep or to maybe wait till some time like the summer half term in August where we both have a week off of work. Or would you just bite the bullet and bin them all and see what happens ? I'm happy to try a reward system, e.g. get her a new toy for napping without a dummy.
The dummies aren't affecting her development as far as I'm aware but they are getting a bit gross looking and I don't want to buy any more. Also if we leave the house without one it can be stressful, she also has two favourites that we have to make sure are in her cot at night and I'd love to be able to just not worry about it.
