Daily incident reports

So ds (1.5) is very happily settled in nursery and the staff seem absolutely lovely and very diligent, we've been really happy with their care and ds is excited to see them every morning.

I know it's totally normal for toddlers to get bumps and bruises but the last two weeks he's had an incident report every day bar one (he's in nursery 5 days a week).

Most of the bumps are to do with him falling over his own feet and hitting his head or face and I'm starting to worry that there's something wrong with his balance or his walking. He's one of the younger children in the room and has just moved from the babies room so I'm thinking it could also be that he's trying to keep up with sightly older and steadier children, but the staff have said he's also got no fear when climbing etc and would happily launch himself off an edge or try to stand up while he's sliding down the slide etc. At home I've taught him to always roll onto his tummy and climb down feet first from the bed/ sofa etc and he's always been good at that.

At home he doesn't really fall that much but if we're out walking he likes to hold my hand for the most part. We were out on Sunday for the afternoon and he walked for most of it on his own and only fell twice. The only time I'd notice him getting really obviously clumsy and falling a lot is when he's really tired and ready for a nap and then he's steadier when he wakes up again.

I'm wondering at what point should I worry or if I should be speaking to someone about this to check we're not missing anything. To my mind he's a happy, healthy wee boy and he's always been right on track with all his milestones but I'm scared of missing something. Does this sound normal?

Do you know if he's getting a good nap at Nursery and what time he gets one? Could it be that he's just very tired?

It seems like the incidents are happening across the day so not at any particular time. He came home with a black eye and a big egg on his head today. He gets his nap at around 12 and he usually sleeps about an hour and a half. The staff think he's just very enthusiastic and boisterous and he doesn't always let his feet catch up with him. None of the incidents in themselves are a big deal I just wasn't sure if that frequency is normal at this age!

It does seem a lot but it's been a long time since mine were that age.

There isn't a set number.

Dd1 hardly ever had a fall. She considered things and decided if they were in her comfort zone before she tried them. I can only think of once that she really had a hard fall - she hardly even had scraped knees.

Dd2 was the opposite. I remember arriving into school at 9am for assembly (they started at 8:45) to be handed a bumped head form. When she was learning to walk she would get herself standing then throw herself forward and keep going until she fell. She also didn't catch herself very well (she only has one hand) so bumps tended to be bigger than they should have been. She also made a fuss so she was always spotted if she'd had a fall. But she didn't have any major ones.

Ds is between the two. He considers if it's worth it and then does it, sometimes out of his comfort zone. He's had two broken bones, but both from football, but numerous A&E trips with twisted ankles, swollen fingers and other injuries. He also tends to hide any injuries so if they are bad, then they often look worse by the time they're found. But he didn't have anything like as many minor injuries as dd2 - although he did once get two bumped head forms within an hour.
