He has just learned to roll over tonight and is now sleeping with his whole face flat in the mattress. Of course I have sat for absolutely ages watching and he is breathing but I dont know how! ds1 didnt do this and I am freaked as it just looks so dangerous, anyone who can reassure me its ok or what I can do to keep him on his side?

He does have good head control but as a rule doesnt like being on his tummy which is making me worry more.

mine both slept face down but to one side, legs tucked under and bum in air
you can roll him back if you want

I used to do this apparently! I am now 31, fit and healthy - so I wouldn't worry about it too much! he would move his head if he couldn't breathe.

Thanks, if I roll him back he just goes straight back over. ds1 slept the same as yours, its just that I cant see his face thats weird. however, he has been like it for 45 mins now and is breathing so presumably he is ok. Thought I would be more relaxed 2nd time around!

DS did this around four months old. I kept running in and flipping him over but next time I looked he'd be back over- face nuzzled into the cot mattress. Scared the hell out of me but he stopped after about a week. The novelty of rolling wore off! I think often with new skills they practice them in there sleep. He's old enough to be able to move himself if he couldn't breathe. DS still does it now sometimes but only for naps, not at night

Thank you all, I will stop monitoring him now. Now I wonder if it will actually mean he is more comfortable and sleeps better.....I can but hope
