When do they stop doing this?...so embarrassing

My 17 mo. DD keeps calling everyone Daddy or Granny. She just embarrassed me by calling a young meter reader daddy repeatedly, she called the librarian Daddy then Granddad (he is older) and calls any older people we see Granny or Granddad! She calls men in the street Daddy - I am pretty shy and find this soo embarrassing . How long does this last? I know its only a matter of time before she starts saying "fat" and things to people though It was funny yesterday - I met a boy the same age, when he left, she said "Bye Bye Granny" to him and he said "Bye Bye Daddy"

If I remember correctly this phase is (thankfully) very short! Oh the embarrassment

I hope so..I am still cringing about the meter reader..and the man yesterday..and the fact she called my neighbour Granny today ..its endless!

my eldest used to delight in asking any repairman, door to door sales people, window cleaners ect ect 'are you my daddy??' I think she liked the embarrased reaction so much that she wanted to do it again and again she was 2 ish

aparently its a language aquisition thing, they eventually realise that not all youngish men are 'daddy' and older men 'grandad' and its just something to say to their particular daddy not everyones daddy.

Young children do tend to over-generalise when they first acquire speech, so for example 'car' will represent all moving objects and 'dog' will represent all animals. My dd went through a short phase of calling her daddy 'mummy' - he was not impressed!

I like the word "short" there...bit scared by the fact it can carry on until they are 2 though

v short phase. We now have DS saying "man" or "lady" to EVERYONE. All well and good except he's only got about 70% accuracy and that can be very embaressing.

Shitemum · 03/04/2008 20:24

DD1 4.6 still refers to people as 'that dada' or 'that mama' sometimes.

OMG I will have to grow a thick skin then!

To all the people who shared a train carriage with my 18m DS and me last week, whilst he shouted CAAAAAR at the 7,289 objects we passed that had wheels, I apologise

sweetkitty · 03/04/2008 20:28

Wait until your 3yo shouts "Mummy why is that man wearing a dress?" about a very butch woman with short hair in a dress.

HereComeTheGirls · 03/04/2008 20:30

I just KNOW she will do stuff like that, she has to name EVERYTHING she sees!! NineUnlikelyTales - my DD also shouts car at every car she sees..and throws in "wheels" occasionally for a bit of variety!!

Apparently when I was small our neighbour (female) had very hairy armpits, and I kept saying "pussy, pussy" and pointing at them - my mum was very

Oh, she also shouts "glasses" or "hat" at anyone wearing them..fairly innocuous SO far...I wonder what will come next!

..and just to share the embarrassment with Daddy too, she keeps lifting up his top and shouting "tummy, tummy", especially in front of my female friends, and he has a bit of a big belly!!
