Child been given a high prescription glasses - what does this mean?

Hello

I took my 4 year old for an eye test after I noticed he was squeezing his eye shut at times and looking over the bridge of his nose at things. I thought I was being overly cautious and a bit over the top, but it turns out he has a pretty high prescription and he has also been referred to the hospital.

I'm so devastated by this and have been Googling into what caused this, and what I can do to help him.

Can anyone offer any advice? His prescription is +6.5 on one eye and +6 on the other. I've had a wee look through his glasses just now and wow they are strong. How could he be seeing anything before?!

Does this get better? Is this something that can be resolved or will he have glasses forever?

I should have asked at the opticians but I was so upset at the time I just left.

Thank you

No idea sorry @notmybesteffort but it's not the end of the world wearing glasses, I quite like mine.

Hope you get the answers you want at the Hospital, I'd probably write your questions down and hand them over.

The good news is that his prescription WILL most likely improve in time...literally as his eyes grow. My DS2 got glasses at just 6 months old (he had other issues hence checking his eyesight) and by 4 years his prescription was +8.00!
But as he (and his eyeballs) physically grew his prescription got weaker... as an adult it's +4.00 /+4.50

We were seen at the hospital for years but now he goes to Specsavers :)

But yes he will most likely always need glasses (laser surgery is not usually as effective for + prescriptions and not at higher levels)

I know it's a shock at first, and there is nothing you could have done, but at least he has them now and his world will be a lot clearer :)
Glasses are cool now... children's vision problems are picked up earlier and loads of children in my school wear them, and after a while you will find he looks strange to you if he isn't wearing them Smile

Good luck for the exam and we'll done for noticing! I know they do an eye exam at school for that very reason- often things get missed. We noticed in our case because my kid started to squint.. horrible moment when that eye starts rolling..so very good you caught it before one eye starts having issues!
Also, if it makes you feel better, kids can correct really well w their eyes (maybe not quite for a +6 but it would allow them to see much much better than what you'd think). And he can see perfectly for anything further away. I know it's a big thing as glasses change how your little one looks but I promise that within weeks you will think he is even cuter with his glasses on. Outlook wise: I have also been told that as they grow, prescriptions may get worse at first and then get better towards teenage years and adulthood.
