Can a toddler not point clap and wave and not have autism?

Hi all,

So my 22 month old has limited language, won't point, clap or wave and walked at 18 months.

I don't want advice re ears being tested, how these are red flags, assessment tools online etc as we know all this, I'm simply asking did anyone have a toddler with delayed development with speech And copying gestures but they caught up and their child was fine and didn't have ASD?

I know a child who has autism who was reading and speaking very early and a child with severe autism who walked aged 11 months so just wondered if can work the other way around and have the above symptoms and not have. Autism?

Thanks all

Not our experience sorry. DC2 had delayed speech and is on the pathway awaiting diagnosis.

Only looking for examples of children without autism not doing these things thanks. Plenty of examples of them with it. Cheers

I am in the same boat as you. My child seems to understand but not everything fully yet he is turning 3 soon but he does not show autistic traits, but online its only full of ASD. But speaking to many moms live and direct, they say they grow out of it kids grow differently and they eventually catch up in their own time

Hi, so just to update you. We paid privately for a salt assessment and an audiology assessment. He has been diagnosed with bilateral glue ear with significant hearing loss so due to have grommets inserted next month. We are hoping that that is the issue. Otherwise he's doing well apart from the same as I stated earlier. Salt assessment didn't feel he showed signs of asd. Will keep you updated. But we did go to the GP initially who said no glue ear but apparently a gp can't really diagnose it you need to see an audiologist for specific tests. Our sons ear drum wasn't vibrating at all but a gp can't see that. So nhs lists mean to see an audiologist would have been months and then 2 years for grommets. So if you can afford it then pay privately for their heating to be tested if not done so already.

Hi, yes the update is

Our son is now 2 and a half. He had grommets fitted privately and his hearing is now perfect. He is improving socially and he can now wave, clap and point and points at everything. He still struggles with his speech and is due to start salt at the end of this month on the NHS but his speech is improving all the time and although he is behind, he's making new sounds and trying new words all the time. He attends mainstream playgroup and private nursery when I'm at work and is doing really well. He is due to be assessed by a paediatrician for ASD as the referral was put in 6 months ago so we will see after that.

Do you have similar concerns?

Hey he's doing amazing thanks. Turned our he'd had glue ear for ages and this we think is what caused the delay. Took almost 10 months for him to start talking after grommets. Now he waves, claps, points all the time. His speech is improving every day. He's now interacting with friends and family and always responds to his name. He plays and socialised and this is improving all the time. He's happy and laughing all the time. He is still behind with his speech compared to some but I'm not surprised. But he's saying new things and copying new words all the time now and he went for an autism assessment and they didn't diagnose him because he is improving so much now so just going to see how things go. He continues with speech and language sessions. He also no longer does the sort of flapping his arms he did as he can now express excitement and joy in other ways. I miss that cute flapping now but at the time I was obsessed with every little thing he did being a sign of autism and with all the anxiety I missed out on enjoying some of his cute ways. I regret that now. Anyway all in all he's really doing well so thanks for asking. If anyone else has a toddler who isn't waving clapping and pointing yet and seems to be struggling with socialising and even walking late... This can all be linked to glue ear and loss of balance so get this checked and don't just take a GPS word for it because our gp said he didn't have glue ear and when we paid privately to see the audiologist she said a gp can't simply say yes or no by looking into their ears. He had 80 percent hearing loss in each ear before grommets!!!!! Imagine this had taken years to diagnose... Imagine we couldn't afford to go private for audiology and grommets. Was a 2 year wait on the NHS for grommets.

Hey we have a private ENT APPT in 2 weeks, how long from the initial appt was the grommets fitted and was it a painful procedure/everything go ok? Also was there any other issues, lip tie/adenoids or tonsil issues? I think my little boy has these also, but was convince it was autism at one point. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions , how old is your child now?
