Have his hearing tested?

Also if he shouts and then you shout to get heard over him it'll reinforce the increased volume - teachers do the "speak quieter than the children" approach to bring the volume of a noist class down and I've seen it work!

So when he shouts speak quietly and softly in response and it should bring his volume down?

Remember he prob doesn't know he's doing it - or he wouldn't do it!

Oh, God. Have I got years of this then? DS is only three, and he's terrible for shouting ... or I should say, talking loudly. There's no aggression in it ... just volume. Much volume.

his hearing is fine. even when he's talking normally he shouts.

i'll try the speaking softly thing. as soon as he wakes he starts shouting.

Can you play whispering/quiet secret agent-type games?

Like "let's be really quiet and daddy/sister/dog won't hear us - what a laugh"?

Or tell him about lip reading and try some out for fun? Not that he needs to be able to lip read but it might make him more aware of his high volume.

southeastastra · 31/03/2008 19:33

lip reading sound like fun, maybe i could video him to show him how loud he's being, or is that going too far?

You could try but I doubt if he'll take it on board - trouble is he'd have to remember to be quiet and that's doubtful he could do it at his age?

Just try and get the whole household to quieten down.

Turn the TV down so you have to try harder to hear. Turn it off when you're not watching it. Have no background noise (no music/radio in the car or at home).

southeastastra · 31/03/2008 20:09

the tv thing is true, we have that on and the radio. thinking about it we have constant noise here (apart from him).

Apparantly children are not able to talk quietly till they are about 9...sigh....

shouldhavebeenblonde · 31/03/2008 21:02

my ds (6) also shouts all the time, or sings very loud, or screams. i don't mind the shouting as much as the ear piercing scream. i try to get him outside if i can, cos then at least the sound doesn't seem so bad. not always possible. and also not great when dds join in!

gagarin · 31/03/2008 22:26

well - if you think your house has quite a lot of background noise try banning it all for a week and see how you all get on?

It might make no difference but you never know - esp if you speak deliberatley quietly as well!

southeastastra · 08/04/2008 20:20

gagarin it works (so far), no tv, no radio just the slight humm of the pc. been lovely and peaceful, i blame the awful children's cartoon channels . hope it lasts. thanks
