I keep getting asked when i am going to move DD into a bed. How do you know when the time is right? and any advice re the move would be most welcome.

I have just taken the side of dd's cot off to see what happens. So far she's been fine, but the side is still there for a bit just to make sure [she is 2 btw]

laundrylover · 31/03/2008 14:25

DD2 has just had a bed for her 2nd birthday last week. DD1 moved a bit earlier as we needed the cot for DD2.

Got her an Ikea bed and she look so tiny in it! It has a side bar so she hasn't fallen out at all.

MyEye · 31/03/2008 14:28

both times, just before 3rd bday -- coincided with the dcs being dry at night, so they could get out by themselves and use potty in the mornings
sold it as a promotion for being so old and sophisticated
by 3 they're old enough to understand there may be repercussions if they get out and run around the house -- it has been pretty painless with us

Twitmonster · 31/03/2008 14:29

oh and ds1 was 2, he got it for his birthday but naughty ds2 was about 3 because he wouldn't stay in bed.

BrunetteBombshell · 31/03/2008 14:30

As soon as they could walk confidently and climb in and out of the bed. So DD was about 13mths and DS 15myhs. They had a bar on the side to stop them falling out but this was taken away by 18ths and they both slept fine from then on.

Pesha · 31/03/2008 14:30

DD moved into a bed just after her 2nd birthday,I moved house and it seemed silly to make the cot up again so tried her in the bed and she was fine.

DS1 started climbing out the cot at 16 months so went into a bed at 17 months. Had to get a bed guard which I hadnt done for dd and stairgate on his room with all climbable toys removed!! Was younger than I would have planned but didnt really have a choice!

I think it depends on the child though and when they feel happy to do it and seem ready.

laundrylover · 31/03/2008 14:44

Yes, I still have a stairgate at the top of the stairs for night time as kids room is on other side of stairs to ours....I don;t think that DD2 has realised that she can get out of bed yet!! She's still in her sleeping bag but will progress to duvet tonight....bet she's in our bed at 2am!!

sparkleymummy · 31/03/2008 14:46

DS1 was just 2. Needed to get him out of the nursery before the arrival of DS2. We had a bed guard and a stairgate on his door so that we could leave the door open but know he couldn't wander out and fall down the stairs in the night.

We had the bed up for him to play on for about a week to get him used to it and he was fine from the very first night.

FAWKEOFF · 31/03/2008 14:50

ds has beenin his own bed since novemberish....and he loves it, he turned 2 in october....he downt have a bed rail on the side as it is a junior bed so very low to the floor and i put a single duvet down on the floor incase he rolls off.

BexieID · 31/03/2008 14:51

I've been wondering the same (well Tom has a cotbed, but wondered when to take the sides off!). He moves around ALOT during the night though and he is quite often awake and full of beans when it's bedtime.

imblet · 31/03/2008 15:43

Thanks all, I didn't say that DD was 2 only 3 weeks ago so maybe i will start thinking about taking the sides off her cot bed. If nothing else it will do my back a lot of good.

i moved ds into his bed at 20 mths as he hated the bars of the cot slept less and hated going to bed

he used to also sleep diagnally and kept getting stuck in bars even with 4 cot bumpers

got him junior bed slept ok but soon became same not sleeping not enough room to spread out so now has single bed with safety rail and loves it he is 3 next month

bobsi · 31/03/2008 18:45

Dd is 2 and a half and she moved into a big single bed a month ago (baby no2 due in six weeks forced the issue). I've been brave and haven't used a bed guard and she's only fallen out twice with no problems. The bed seems so big - bless. The first week was worrying as she got out a lot but constant returns and 'shhh, it's night-time now' seemed to do the trick pretty quickly and she sleeps through perfectly now. We shut the door and still have a monitor in there so I can hear her if she needs me.
Think I'd have waited a bit longer if baby hadn't been on the way though.
We've got a soft landing on the floor just in case she falls out but it really hasn't been a problem. I've also considered turning duvet round and tucking it under the mattress on both sides if necessary. Good Luck.

ScoobyDoo · 31/03/2008 18:48

DD moved when she was 23 months it has been just over 2 months now & she loves her bed, we have a gat on her bedroom though but she sleeps well in her bed.

We knew the time was right because she was frustrated in her cot as it was to small & she kept jumping out of it.

When 17 month old dd jumped out of her cot and broke her arm

mad4mybaby · 31/03/2008 18:59

sorry to jump in on thread but iv been wondering when i should make this move. Ds is 21 months in cot bed and is on lowest setting so cant get out of it. Have baby due in november who will obv be in moses basket for few weeks. I plan on trying to potty train in the summer so he doesnt need to use that yet at night!

Should i wait until just before i potty train? Or should i just leave it until need the cot for baby? He sleeps well but worried when sides come off he'll keep getting out of bed and will i be able to cope with keep putting him back when heavier PG??

ds 2, dd 18 months.

Hants · 31/03/2008 21:11

mad4 - I agree with Loopmumsy, I would do it before no. 2 arrives, that way Ds won't feel put out by the new arrival - which may cause a bit of jealousy anyway. Don't be too stressed if the potty training doesn't work, mine is gone 3 and we are still trying to coax him out of them! Boys are a lot slower than girls.

beckystaffs · 31/03/2008 21:27

Mad4- I agree with Loopmumsy and Hants. My dd1 was 18months and was fine (we tried the cot bed 1st but it cracked when dp sat on it the first night). So 2nd night she went straight into a full size single with 2 bed guards. dd2 was born when dd1 was 21months and so glad we got her into a bed first. Dd2 was 10lb8oz born so didn't fit into her moses basket after a couple of weeks.

Ps. soooo glad it wasn't me who sat on it and cracked it - it was a mamas & papas one too- though they only have a 6 month guarantee

perpetualworrier · 31/03/2008 21:40

DS1 was 21 months. I was expecting DS2 and we bought a bed, just so he could get used to it being in the house. Hadn't really intended for him to move straight it. He had been a terrible sleeper in the cot, so when he said he wanted to go in the bed I thought, Ok, it can't get any worse and in fact it was a massive improvement.

DS2 always loved the cot and he stayed in it until he could climb out, as I was worried he'd fall. In true 2nd baby style, I couldn't tell you what age that was, but it was much later than DS1.

beckystaffs · 31/03/2008 21:40

ps hants my dd1 is now 3.5 and still not potty trained!!!
she will stay dry all day if you put her in pants- but won't have a wee/poo for 14 hours. we have decided to leave it a bit and see what happens.

Hants · 31/03/2008 21:45

Hi beckystaffs, sorry I had to laugh at your msg, though not funny to hold it for that long. I will continue to be patient and wait until he is ready. Best of british!

beckystaffs · 31/03/2008 21:56

she put have inherited her dad's pelvic floor muscles thats all i can say.
i think dd2 (22 months) might beat her to it!
