dd is 11 mth and has been cruising for ages!!!! she will walk when you hold both or one hand but not very steadily, and walks with her push walker but seems to walk on tiptoes when pushing that. how can i "help" her conquer her fear of letting go?!?! and what age did yours start walking? and how did they 1st "set" off?

dd has properly kicked in at 13mths! (and having been walking properly for 3 days she is now trying to run....) but one of her mates has only just started to crawl, whilst another one has been walking since 10mths! so I wouldn't worry, they all do it in their own time

MarsLady · 29/12/2004 17:56

DS1 walked at 1y and 9days. Walked without a wobble. Convinced he practised in secret.
DD1 at 10months
DD2 at 10months
DTs currently cruising aged 10 months (and also walking with a push walker)

Not sleeping brilliantly again. Teeth appearing though so perhaps I'll forgive them. Then again................

joashiningstar · 29/12/2004 17:59

DD1 & DD1, DS all walking confidently by 11-12 months. However, GS cruised for months and months - finally walked unaided at 13 months then refused for weeks, started walking properly at around 15 to 16 months (from what I remember... brain fogging up in old age) .

blossomhill · 29/12/2004 18:03

ds - 12 months
dd - 13 months

rouge · 29/12/2004 18:04

lilsmum, see this thread

KBear · 29/12/2004 18:04

DD - 10 months
DS - 15 months

Kittypickle · 29/12/2004 18:05

DD started walking at 12.5 months having spent several weeks cruising. DS started cruising at 11 months and finally graduated into his first pair of shoes this afternoon at 15.5 months. DD "set off" in the park one day when she thought I was holding onto her snow suit and I wasn't.

coppertop · 29/12/2004 18:14

Ds2 was 12 months old exactly. He has no fear whatsoever and just set off for the middle of the room not long after he first started pulling up and cruising.

Ds1 got the hang of pulling up and cruising much earlier but didn't take any independent steps until 14mths. He had no interest in pushalong toys then either.

A lot seems to depend on personality as much as physical strength IME.

kinderbobsleigh · 29/12/2004 18:26

11 months is very early to be worried. The best way to get them to let go is to put away the push walker and don't hold her hands. Then she will do it when she wants to. Which could still be some time away.

Gwenick · 29/12/2004 18:29

DS1 - 17 1/2 months - after crusing furniture since 11 months old

DS2 - 10 months after crusing furniture for 3 weeks LOL

I have 4 and their walking age ranged between 13 months and 19 months.

Hulababy · 29/12/2004 18:43

DD walked at 10 months, after quite a few months of cruising and getting steadily more confident. Then she just took a step - at PILs so with everyone watching her. She stopped, looked around, laughed and did it again. And never stopped since!

Donbean · 29/12/2004 18:52

11months, God help me!!!

heavenlyghost · 29/12/2004 19:12

DS walked at 14 months ...
DD is 11 months and only started bumshuffling 4 weeks ago ... no sign of even cruising ... but I am not worried at all, they all develop at different rates and to be honest I am pleased I have 'late' developers physically as it gives me a bit more time ... EG at 10 months I could leave the room safe in the knowledge that DD wasn't going anywhere whereas my friend was chasing her 6 month old crawler all over the place ...

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 29/12/2004 19:12

Ds1 - 11 months
Ds2 - 12 months
Dd - 13 months
Ds3 - 14 months
I kid you not.

I think they just will walk when they are ready to and there isn't much you can do to get them started except sit in front of them with your arms held out and hope!

It sounds to me like your dd is very close to doing the deed lilsmum.

Posey · 29/12/2004 20:14

Dd was 15m. She waited til she could do it perfectly before letting go of the furniture. So when she went she did it without a wobble.
Ds was just about a year old, tried on and off for a while before confidently walking at about 13m.

mishiclaus · 29/12/2004 21:07

hi
my ds walked at 9mths but was cruising for about 4 weeks before then he just let go and walked across room to his dad.....
good luck
mishi

Gobbledigook · 29/12/2004 21:20

DS1 and DS2 - 9-10 months but most of my friends' children walked around 13-14 months and one not till gone 18 months. All of these are normal so I don't think you should be worried at all.

kid · 29/12/2004 21:26

Can I go for a record here then?

DD started walking at 21 months and 3 days! (not that I was counting or anything! )
She bumshuffled from 12 months so stuck to that method for ages!

DS started crawling at 7 months, cruising at 7.5 months and walked at 11 months.

Linnet · 29/12/2004 21:44

dd1 cruised round the furniture from 8 months and walked on her own at 13 months.

janeybops · 29/12/2004 22:18

dd crawled at 8 and half months and walked at 13 months.

ds crawled at 5 months, cruised at 6 and half months, walked at 10 months

TwasTheNightBeforeXmasOwl · 29/12/2004 22:59

ds never crawled, never walked round furniture, just stood up a bit, and then suddenly started walking when he was 18mnths. strangely he had just started to spend time at a house where there was a toddler. i think he saw her and thought "ooh id like to do that". dd started "crawling" (by that i mean with her belly on the floor but she still gets everywhere she wants to) a couple of months ago (she's nearly one) has about two weeks ago started to stand up and im thinking she will be walking soon.

SofiaAmes · 30/12/2004 04:40

ds crawled at 6 months (eeek) and walked at 12 months. dd crawled at 8 months but didn't start walking until 18. However she was speaking in full sentences at 12 months...a very odd sight.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 30/12/2004 04:53

both crawled at 8.5 mo
ds1 walked at 12.5 mo and ds2 on his first birthday

In answer to your original question about letting go all I can say is old fashioned temptation, put her something she really wants to get her hands on (remote control, phone, your glass of wine) in the middle of the room while she's having a cruise and watch her go for it.

IME they tend to let go when they don't know they are doing it IYSWIM
