Is this appropriate amount of food / eating schedule for 1 year old?

My son is 1, and has recently stopped eating as he usually would. He used to love all the home cooked food I made him and would eat decent portions at lunch and dinner, but for at least the last week he’s hardly eaten much, especially at lunch.
I don’t know if I’m filling him up too much in the morning maybe?
Breakfast is usually a weetabix with whole milk and half a banana and sometimes peanut butter at 8am. He always eats all of breakfast.
Snack of a small portion of yogurt, usually with a couple of blueberries at 10:15.
Lunch at 12:30 can be anything like eggs and beans, curry, toast, crackers etc. Today he ate two small spoons of egg and beans and nothing else. I offered toast, a breadstick and half a banana but he threw them on the floor.
I usually offer a snack of an oaty fruit bar or melty puffs about 3ish. Sometimes he’ll eat these, sometimes not.
Dinner is around 5:15pm and is things like curry, meatballs, bolognese, cheesy pasta, jacket potato etc.
Do you think he’s having too much in the morning and that’s why he won’t eat so much for lunch or dinner? Or he’s having food too often, though I thought they go about 2-3 hours between food at this age? I’m trying to work out if he’s just getting fussy with food or if he needs less food. He runs around aaaalll day so I feel like he needs the calories and nutrients but he doesn’t seem to agree! 🤦🏻‍♀️

When children turn 1 their growth slows down a lot and therefore their intake will reduce as well. If you google you can find portion sizes for toddlers for all kinds of foods.

Also something to think about too, if he has milk, is he having more milk than he needs?

Btw what you posted sounds fine to me!

How much milk is he having @Row23 and which type is he on?

CadyEastman · 07/04/2024 08:50

Just been thinking about this. Could it just be that he likes to load up on calories in the morning? I do this still and it's a very healthy way to eat, "breakfast like a king" and all that Wink

If you want a guide on what he should be having then this one from the Caroline Walker Trust gives sample menus and guidance on portion sizes Wink

He’s breastfed in the morning and evening, sometimes he’ll only do a couple of minutes, sometimes closer to 10. He doesn’t really drink cows milk as a drink. We offer it to him throughout the day, the same as we offer water, but he’s not super keen on it so only drinks a small amount. He will happily have it in his cereal which is maybe why he gets full from breakfast as I try to give him a fair bit of milk to make sure h getting enough calcium 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don't worry about calcium. He'll be able to utilise the milk in your BM and from his diet easily enough. There's a great article on calcium and BFing from Kellymom here.

If you're still concerned about calcium on his diet, I wouldn't personally just focus on dairy, have a look at other sources of calcium too Wink
