grey teeth

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

A couple of weeks ago, my three year old fell off his scooter and landed on his mouth. He had a fat lip and he said his tooth hurt. We took him to the dentist and she said that a tooth felt a bit loose and it might go grey. She said that they just leave grey (i.e. dead) teeth as placemarkers for the adult teeth and to go back to her if there are any problems.

Anyway, both of his top front teeth are turning grey.

Has this happened to anyone else's child and what happened in the long term? Did the tooth fall out or get loose early? Did it have to be removed? Did it stay in place until it was time for adult teeth?

I fell on my face 4 years ago and a tooth died. I had a root canal and the tooth bleached internally, but that's obviously not an option for a child.

I'd be grateful to hear anyone's experiences with this. Thanks.

Yes DS1 fell off a tricycle at nursery, so he would have been about the same age. The damaged tooth turned grey, but didn't fall out until he was 5 1/2 (about normal time) The new tooth behind it is fine.

My ds1 (nearly 6)has a dead grey tooth in the front, very normal amd common. It wil lfall out when its ready, with room for the adult one.

Hi there, I am a dentist and the teeth have turned grey because they have died. As long as your little one isn't having any discomfort from them then it is fine to leave them like this. majority of the time they will fall out as normal when the adult teeth push through. don't worry it is veery common to see kids who have had just little blows to their teeth for this to then happen. hope this helps.

my dgs front teeth are grey from faling on them, they dont look nice but otherwise are ok

My ds has a top fron tooth the same, have been told as long as it doesn't get infected or bother him it will stay there until he loses his baby teeth. It is unsightly but at least he is not in pain, and if it had been knocked out he may have had trouble when his other teeth grew.

Thanks everyone. I was just worried that they might fall out, so I'm pleased to hear that they will probably stay there until the normal time to fall out.

Thanks very much.

Mungarra,

This happened to my DS1 when he was 3.

One of his top front teeth came out naturally but the other is still firmly wedged in (he's nearly 9 now). He's been referred to the Paediatric Dentistry clinic to have it removed, but they think the adult tooth may also have been damaged .
