I often repeat this to myself, especially re ds's sleep (wakes approx 10 times a night!), but where does the phrase come from??

Not sure but probably very, very old

MrsB you were faster than me. Maybe we could have tee-shirts printed with the Hebrew script on them?

THIS, TOO, SHALL PASS
Abraham Lincoln, in a speech said:
'It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence to be ever in view and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words, 'And this, too, shall pass away.'

says the dictionary of phrase origins.

or nappy bags
or muslins
or eyelid props...

God, I was only thinking where did that phrase come from this morning! How wierd. People kept telling me 'this too shall pass' when I posted rather depressing threads about my grumpy, awkward 7 month old ds! I thought it was from a film or something

Crikey, 10 times a night! You poor luv, you must be so knackered. How old is he? Don't worry too much though- This too shall pass right????!

ViolentFemme · 26/03/2008 20:46

I found the phrase on mumsnet and repeat it to myself often.

Again · 26/03/2008 22:03

Cheers! I know all the mumsnet gang are very wise, but had a feeling it didn't originate here.

He's 9mths meandmyjoe and crossing my fingers and wearing out the phrase are the only things keeping me going!

Waswondering -I believe that the phrase 'it came to pass' means 'it so happened that..', rather than 'it didn't come to stay'. A bit like saying 'once upon a time'.

The phrase 'this too shall pass' IS Biblical, I think...Will research!

Janni · 26/03/2008 22:17

Whoops - MrsBadger already did!

I understand

I first heard the phrase in relation to babies on another forum a few years ago. I was quite surprised to see it being passed around here, too!

Thank you Mrs B!
