Hi,

Just looking for peoples experience if there child has been referred or completed an ELSA course at school due to their behaviour?

My child has and school have agreed to proceed with it but I haven't been given any information about the next steps.

  1. How long did it take from it being agreed by the school until the sessions took place
  2. Did it help, if so did it take long for the change to happen?

Many thanks!

My 7yo son has ELSA sessions in school every week. He struggles with anger and frustration, especially when it comes to other children receiving praise, he really struggles to cope with this. It's made worse if his twin sister is involved but it's not just her, it's any other child. The ELSA is a trained TA who he knows and is comfortable with. She is working really hard with him on his own and in very small groups and he is really benefiting from it. I have had to keep on at the school, the class teacher, a few times for it to get put into place however. Felt like I was a nuisance but I kept going until they organised it. My advice is to keep on at them.

Thanks for responding. I'm glad to hear that your son seems to be benefitting from having them.

They agreed to sign her up to it last Monday after quite an emotional conversation where I forgot to ask the next steps really! I emailed Tuesday just querying the next steps but have had nothing back which is frustrating.

She is really good at school, it's home that is the problem 🤣🥲

I understand. It's such a stress. My son originally didn't have issues at school either and when I queried it at school the class teacher was visibly shocked I was asking such a thing! My application to CAHMS was rejected because the class teacher didn't back up when I was saying about his behaviour at home because he didn't display it at school. However, within 3 months we were called into school and told they thought he had been superbly masking his behaviours at school and they were now seeing snippets of the issues I had previously mentioned . It's not just anger and frustration, there's a lot more to it at home including OCD but it took for school to see the issues for them ti believe us, or that's how it felt. It was like they didn't believe us that he was masking it all. He was a pro! Is it possible your daughter is also masking? What is she struggling with?

Some people have suggested the word masking but I don't really know exactly what it means!

She has been better this week but the main issue are quite explosive bouts of anger if she doesn't get what she wants or she's not allowed to do something like throwing stuff at me, hitting etc but again she would never dream of doing that at school or her dads house
