Things your children have said which have 'lightened' the mood when things are bad

When my MIL died last year DS1 had lots of questions and wanted to say goodbye. We didn't want him to go to the funeral as he was only 3.5 at the time but DH and I agreed to take him to the church beforehand and show him nanny's coffin and try to explain things to him. We got there and thought we had explained things really well when all of a sudden he piped up with "are they going to saw nanny in half?"

I suppose a coffin does look similar to those magicians boxes!

lol

Not quite as sombre but not long ago my dad and I had cross words quite out of character for both of us. We were sat on the sofa at my parents house with DS aged nearly 2 in between us. While we were arguing we both looked down at DS who was sat there with his fingers in his ears. We both burst out laughing and the arguement was over

On the way out of the church at my Dad's funeral last year I took DS's aged 4.5 hand at the back of the church to walk out behind the coffin with me and he said: "Are we going to see Grandpa's skeleton?" at the top of his voice. It really cheered everyone up!

yesterday; as a direct response to me gently and sensitively telling my dd1 (14) that unfortunately dp and I have decided to go our separate ways (fairly big, distressing info you would imagine, no?), she replied with

"Oh no, I'm sorry Mum - but, anyway, guess what? I met a well fit lad in Austria, skiing.... and guess what? He liked me too!!!!!!!"

oh, how we 'larfed'

schneebly · 24/03/2008 18:47

Spatz · 24/03/2008 19:17

PS schneebly - always loved your name - where does it come from?

schneebly · 24/03/2008 19:32

well spatz..

dh and I have a terrible habit of calling the children anything but their real names and when DS2 was a baby among random bizarre names like Spatula and PeeQuee (dh! ) we started calling him Schneebly but didn't realise where we had heard the word until I remembered it was the surname of a character in the film 'school of rock' which we happened to have seen around that time.

we look really weird now. We don't call the dog his real name either - he is called Yish but gets called schmo.

OP posts:
schneebly · 24/03/2008 19:33

he isnt called Yish - he is called Yoshi! My typing is atrocious!

OP posts:
Wisteria · 24/03/2008 19:34

we did that too Schneebly - my dd2 became Mickey Rooney amongst other things........... and now gets called smell/ mickey/ rooney and lots more things!!

schneebly · 24/03/2008 19:36

oh wisteria - so glad we aren't the only weirdos!

Belgimum · 25/03/2008 11:06

my DD aged 4 asked what my favourite kind of phone was.... tellophone or cellophone

indiechick · 25/03/2008 11:13

Was arguing with dp the other week and dd pipes up in the middle of it, but mummy, you just need to get on with it!
Both collapsed laughing and stopped arguing.
