Hi All,
A first time mum here having sleepless nights as my baby boy is not babbling or doing any gestures. He waved about a month ago for a week and hasn’t done it since.

He is the happiest, smiliest little man. He adore peekaboo and loves being up in my arms. He smiles at strangers and starting to get shy. He has started to walk with his Walker and loves playing with his toys.

Im so concerned as I know the above mentioned are flags for ASD. Has anyone else any experience of this? Please help

Could be ok. Has the HV booked you both in for the 12 month check yet?

Melissa37 · 07/02/2024 19:37

Yes she has. Last one was cancelled as she was sick so hoping will get some advice from her soon

It's good that she's booked the 1: month check. Have you filled in the Ages & Stages?

Hi @Melissa37 how’s your little one coming on now?

Melissa37 · 28/07/2024 08:35

He’s doing so well. He started gesturing around 11 and a half months and babbling at 12 and a half months. We still don’t have very distinguishable words but we ve been to a speech therapist and he does have a speech delay but excelling in all other areas. I’m not worried at all anymore. Some kids are just late talkers and I wish I had more faith in that when I was worried a few months ago. I know now he will just come along in his own little time.

Hi @Melissa37 aw that’s brilliant news, what type of babbling is he doing if you don’t mind me asking?

Melissa37 · 28/07/2024 10:02

It started just very minimal with d and b sounds and that lasted a long time. It’s only in recent weeks we have gotten variation with p sounds and “yay” and variation such as ba da and finally hearing a ma ma ma. Are you worried about your little one?

Hi @Melissa37 hes just turned ten months and only in the past week we’ve had a few wawa/raraaaa/baaa type of babbles but it’s not frequent which kinda scares me, also no clapping waving or pointing, I keep telling myself he’s focussing on the physical milestones trying to climb the stairs etc also doesn’t come and bring me any toys or show me any either.

Melissa37 · 28/07/2024 13:22

He sounds like he’s doing really well. We didn’t get clapping and pointing until he was 11.5-12.5 months. I was really worried about the not showing or bringing toys too but it really only started around 13 months. He is also so physical too and was walking really early. He’s in crèche now and they are not one bit worried they say you get a walker or a talker which has proven so tie in our case

@Melissa37 ahh thank you for being so kind, I’m so worried with him, as you see other babies his age and they engage so well and play with there toys where his just go straight in his mouth or he throws them🙈 it’s like if I say where’s daddy he won’t look for him in the room so it just seems a bit off atm😩 with your DCs speech delay how did they rule it out?

Melissa37 · 28/07/2024 14:48

We had an 11 month check with PHN when there was no babbling and no gestures. They referred us to the Area Medical Officer. We did an Ages and Stages Questionnaire and they did an observation of him. At this stage (14.5 months) he was babbling and doing some gestures. They didn’t seem concerned but said if he doesn’t have 4 words by 18 months to go to a SLT.
I rang a private one and she saw him at 16.5 months and said that she also felt it was a language delay only.
Honestly if I was talking to my very worried self a few months ago i would tell myself to give him more time. We are still not near others in terms of communication milestones but he’s running around and understands everything. It was really after a year I saw so many leaps made.

It’s terms of ruling it out it was really observation of his interactions with others including non verbal, checking in with mum and dad etc, his understanding but really this came on leaps and bounds after 12 months.
