Silent Reflux - which milk?

Any Mums here who've had their baby diagnosed with silent reflux? I am nanny to a 4month old who was diagnosed with relux 3 weeks ago. Luckily Mum was able to afford to go privately and baby was diagnosed very quickly. The reflux seemed to come on very quickly, although she's always been a poor feeder, but we struggled to get on average 16oz a day down her. Now we're up to 25oz - yippee!!! Doctor prescribed ranitidine which works when we can actually get in down her. She's a pro at holding it in her mouth then spitting it just when you think she's swallowed it! Anyway Doctor also reccomended Cow and Gate Pepti but didn't give a prescription. It costs £37.50 a tin! We are trying to get it on prescription but I was just wondering what other Mums gave their children when diagnosed with silent reflux as I don't think it's making much difference as when she doesn't get a good dose of medicine she's back to arching and screaming and refusing to feed.

Hi there,

This is soo stressful. My DS when he was newborn was diagnosed as he was losing weight and not well at all. My GP agreed to prescribe SMA staydown (it was new on the market then and have no idea if still available or may even be re-named)

We never actually got to give him any, think it was a real pain to make, but he was also prescribed Gaviscon powder that you put in the formula.

Could not make it up in advance like a normal bottle so was quite restricting but really helped, however, does your boss approve of alternative options ?

Cranial manipulation by an osteopath did the trick. Suggest you google it, it was fantastic for us. Wether it was that that worked or the meds I didnt really care as it sorted him out in no time.

Good luck and please feel free to ask more just dont want to babble on too much.

try a milk with out any lactose, like neocate, for 6 soild weeks. as the gut needs to heal.

then add a one of the lower lactose milks.

cow and gate peti is only partially changed milk isnt it?

For reflux the lactose covers the valve at the top of the stomach.
one of the jobs of the valve is to control this gas level. Too much in stomach, and up pops the food , with a high level of acid that irritates still further.

Oh my son had reflux we used the Aptimil easy digest milk, and I think it helped. Once he reached 6 months I could swap him onto regular milk, and he is now 8 months and reflux clearing up nicely!

We also used medication with the milk as well!

Hi my son's on ranitidine and for a while we used gaviscon as well but really only because it sort of thickened the milk. So we decided to use a thicker milk instead - eg aptamil easy digest / SMA staydown / Cow & Gate comfort, which also helps his digestion because his gut is a bit 'slow'. You can't use milk thickeners with these formulas. Are you feeding ranitidine with the smallest syringe?

She has 1.3ml of ranitidine 3x a day and this really helps. I am managing to get the medicine down her now without her spitting it but it's still not pleasant for either of us! Still as long as it gets rid of her discomfort. I'm 30weeks pregnant myself and just beginning to suffer with heartburn so I have a huge sympathy for what she must be feeling!Hopefully she will grow out of it once we start weaning.

my dd had this and I just bought Sma staydown myself(could get it at larger lloyds chemist and boots).
It helped tremendously, think I had to use a faster flow teat but apart from that just made it up the same as normal formula.
You can still get it because I saw som e the other day.

ellasmum1 · 21/03/2008 20:58

And it was nowhere near £37 !!! Maybe £7 or £8

Bit mad for the doctor to recommend Pepti and then not prescribe it!

We used breast milk, but that's presumably not an option in this case.

VaginaShmergina · 21/03/2008 23:12

I was also breast feeding but because my DS was losing weight I stopped as no alternative was offered to keep BF and medicate, I was unwell and had got myself in such a state over wether my milk was good enough, and like you say, sadly breast is not always an option.
