My ds was smiling at me and giggling in his sleep at 3 weeks so it is possible. Be warned, this was the start of things to come, he knew the alphabet by 14 months, could read at 3 and is very very bright. He's now 8 and wants to be a philosopher.

LaylaandSethsmum · 19/03/2008 22:39

Mine had some early smiles but they were very random, the smiles in response to something came about 7 weeks .

serant · 19/03/2008 23:12

Thanks. I will wait & see , maybe a random thing!

wow, avenanap your ds sound's a bit of a challenge ( a nice one though )x

Babies first smile just as you are starting to get over the birth, have just started getting the routine of night waking underway, are feeling totally knackered, wondering why the hell you thought getting pregnant was a good idea, and usually the day after your partner has announced that he is shattered and needs a lie in. You are feeling all sorry for yourself and hormonal and shitty, and your hair is sticking up, you can't find any clean knickers and there it is, the first little smile.

They are little buggers, they melt you just when you really need it

barbamama · 20/03/2008 00:01

Mine both started in the third week too. Noone believed me of course but it was true.

PortAndLemon · 20/03/2008 00:05

A typical first smile age is 4-6 weeks, so as with any milestone some will do it earlier and some later. So maybe yours is.

Meandmyjoe · 20/03/2008 06:42

My ds seemed to smile around this time but it wasn't in response to anything, so I always assumed it was just him practicing wth his face muscles. He used to do it a lot in his sleep too so maybe was just twitching! I have read recently though, that if you smile a lot around your baby then they can smile at around 3 weeks so who knows??! Could have been a proper little smile you got flashed. Either way, it makes you feel amazing doesn't it?!!!

bogie · 20/03/2008 06:47

my ds was 5 weeks

kekouan · 20/03/2008 09:40

i've got a picture of DS's first smile on Christmas Day (yes, awww)

he was just over 3 weeks old!!

:-D

Agree with Kitbit - they do it just when you're at your wits end and then you forgive them anything!

DS didn't smile until about 7 weeks but he really was quite a grump for the first couple of months. When he first smiled, it was at my MIL when they were staying for a few days. I remember thinking 'after all I've done for you and you bloody smile at her first'!

ChocolateRockingHorse · 20/03/2008 15:27

DD smiled real smiles at 3 weeks. The boys smiled at 6 weeks even DS2 who had nothing to smile about as was seriously ill in SCBU.

TheProdigalShow · 20/03/2008 15:29

DD smiled just before 3 weeks and several times a day from theron. Thought I was mad but dh, hv, sil and the postie were all smiled at in the next couple of days.

MoominMum · 20/03/2008 22:38

Ours was def smiling at 3 weeks and then went on to work on a laugh but at 11 wks he can still only do the laugh properly in his sleep or he gives himself hiccups! It's a brilliant laugh tho' - he sounds like Mike Ried (stand-up, Runaround and Eastenders, not naff ex-R1 DJ)!

My dd smiled clearly at 5 weeks. As in, in response to looking at mummy or daddy. Now 13 weeks and smiles/ giggles all the time!

PerchanceToDream · 03/12/2012 18:17

DD was 4 weeks. We caught it on camera too. So lovely.
