DD has just turned three and is unable to pronounce her r's at the beginning of words and sounds not unsimilar to Jonathan Ross.

How long does this take to change - or doesn't it??

DH this it highly amusing to get her to say funny sentences containing the word Rank/ranking.

My 4 year old still does it.

I don't know, but my ds still does this at 3.4.

Also, he still can't pronounce an 'S' at the beginning of a word where the next letter is a consonant .. so spot is pot, special is pecial, etc.

I think it's quite cute, really

So do they ever stop, or do all mn Dc have lifelong speech impediments

Hope so, did

It's all too damned cute to wish away.

For what it's worth, I read in the paper the other day that Jonathan Woss could (and can) easily correct his speech impediment .. but he's made a living out of it now, so why should he?

Have you seen Shrek II? He plays the gay bartender. He speaks his 'R's well enough in that!

Hi, My son (4.7) has delayed speech and although quite understandable to the family and thankfully now his teachers in Nursery - he still cannot pronounce 't' and 'c' - he physically can't produce the sound. He has been seeing a speech therapist for a good few years now and we have recently just added 'f' and 's' to his spontaneous speech. Basically, if your child can say 'r' - then each time they miss it off a word, we found just saying "Sorry, what was that word" and urging them to say it again correctly. When they do start including it spontaneously - we applaud and coo saying "oo great sound". I know it sounds common sense but it really has worked for us and my DS is coming on leaps and bounds. The Speech Therapist has been great and built up a wonderful repore with DS.

I still can't say Read. It comes out as Weed!! I am 36!!!
I would say that pwactice makes perfect! (sorry - couldn't reasist)

Seriously though, provided you talk to your LO often using words with r in then they should imitate you.
Hope that helps
Amanda

DS2 (almost5) can't pronounce w or th at the start of a word(comes out d). That is dat, but cloth is Ok. I'm just starting to wonder if it might be a problem, but no-one else has ever mentioned it.
