how do I grow out a fringe of a 3 year old?

Hi, my 3 year old daughter has quite dark auburn hair, just below her sholders with a a fringe. I'm thinking about growing the fringe out before her hair get's too long and it'll take ages for it to become one length. At the moment her hair is quite thick and because it's quite dark the fringe seems to dominate her face.
I just wondered how to stop it going in her eyes. How bo get around that tricky stage of it being to long to leave and too short to tie back ? I want it to look nice and tidy. Does anyone have any tips for me ? Also let me know if you think I should leave it as it is for the moment.

a hair clip

Her hair sounds beautiful.

How about an alice band or hair slides to keep her fringe out of her eyes?

TurkeyLurkey · 19/03/2008 16:28

With my daughter I used one of those clips that has teeth and you squeeze together. I got hold of her fringe and twisted it back off her head and then secured it with this clip on the top of her head.

If I used a normal slide it would just all fall out.

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention that the stubborn little maddam won't keep a head band in. She will keep bands and clips in though ,if she approves of them. ie they usually have to be pink or sparkely.
She's having a nap right now (obviously) so I'll see what that looks like when she wakes up.

llareggub- Thanks, I think her hair is beautiful too. It's in ringlets and people often ask me if it's natural of have I used tongues. (obviously people without children!)
Aimsmum- It's that messy stage I wanted to avoid really. Perhaps I should never have had a fringe cut. I'll have to make sure it's never a mess as my mum will give it a sly trim when she babysits. I know what she's like.

I'm growing out dd's fringe (she's 2.8). She has very thick, long curly hair and I put it in bunches with 4 clips - 2 on each side at the top to keep it out of her eyes. I find 2 is not enough. It's at a very akward stage and I'm tempted to cut it - but we'll keep at it. No chance of using an alice band.

When DS was 3 I used hair clips to keep his hair out of his eyes till it was long enough to stay put behind his ears. Now it's grown out I'm glad I persevered through the messy stage and through the comments from people of "isn't it about time he got a hair cut?"

haggisaggis · 19/03/2008 17:07

It is horrendous growing out a fringe at that age - you need to use clips and they keep losing them and hair ends up in their eyes and it is awful!! But if you persevere you will get there. I started around that age with dd (now 5.5) - it's still not as long as the rest of her hair but at least it's manageable now. Now it is longer and she is at school I use a double pony tail - ie I tie back her fringe and the shorter side bits on top of her head with one bobble and gather the rest of it at the back into another bobble. It doesn't come out!

I do a little plait at the front as it gets longer the plait can be incorporated into a pony tail.

nappyaddict · 19/03/2008 17:12

would she keep kirby grips in?

mummyloveslucy · 19/03/2008 17:14

How long will the messy stage last ?
I'm beggining to think I should never have had it cut.

I think she might if I bribed her with a sparkly necklace.
