9 week old swimming?

My DD will be 9 weeks old on Friday and I'd like to take her swimming at the local pool but I'm not sure if that's ok. Has anyone else done this with such a young baby? I don't want proper lessons at this stage, but I'd like her to get used to being in water, as we live on the coast and I want her to be a strong swimmer in later life. Is it ok, and what on earth should I take with me? The pool does a special "Aquatots" session, so I'm assuming there will be other babies there, but not sure if they'll be as young as my DD. Any advice gratefully received!

Hi
I have asked this same question to our local pools as i would like my daughter who is 12 weeks old to swimming and they told me that she had to be at least 12 weeks old and had her first injections.
It might be an idea to give your local pool a ring and see what there policy is as i think they all differ. Good luck and hope she enjoys it when you get her there.
My sister in law also recommends the huggies swimmers pants as the best ones to put under her costume.:0)

Gp told me that there was no set age to take a child swimming and you dont need to wait for the 1st injections but check with the pool and as long as your comfortabloe with taking the child at that age then there shouldnt be a problem

I started water babies classes when dd was 9 weeks old, we had to go to a special pool heated to >32C as she was also

Some people advise you should wait until the baby has had first set of vaccinations, but the main problem taking babies that young swimming, particularly in a local pool, is that they get cold and exhausted so quickly. You may find 10 minutes is more than enough for your DD and IMO it wasnt worth the hassle involved in the whole process for that with my DS. You may be better off trying to find a pool that is warmer than normal (at least 30deg) that does sessions for babies (eg private schools/health clubs). All you will need to take is swim pants for DD, usually they insist on the neoprene type as they dont leak like others can! You have plenty of time to get her used to being in water though, no need to rush it....

I took ds from 7 weeks on, only 15/20 mins to start with before he got cold, but when we started lesoons at 4 months he was already very happy in the water. Age/jabs restriction was only for lessons, not for general pool useage.
HV said the only reason not to take them so young is that you'd only be able to take them for a really short time and they wouldn't get much out of it.
