moving to a bed...

is it best to wait until they ask to go into a bed? ds is 2 in june and still in a standard cot. there is still plenty of room for him and i like the fact that when he's in there he's not going anywhere. most of his little friends are in beds by now and i don't know whether to do it sooner rather than later. my feelings are if we do it before he asks/wants to go in a bed he will just keep getting out especially as he doesn't really understand that much at the moment. but if i wait til he's older what if he never asks to go in a bed cos he becomes so attached to his cot and has huge massive tantrums about it?

We only moved dd as she learned how to climb out of her cot...I for one would have been quite happy to leave her in there as long as possible!

I think he is unlikely to never want to go into a bed, as when the time comes you can make it exciting by involving him in choosing the bedding etc, and until then at least you know where he is. Dd has settled into a big bed pretty well, but doesn't sleep in as late in the morning as she used to , so we are now all up at 6.30am when she decides to get up!!

Fwiw I reckon wait a bit longer! We moved ds when he was 2.2 and it just took a couple of nights of settling and then he was fine. Never fell out of it and never really took the opportunity to roam the house at night. We only moved him to a bed then as had a new baby on the way. My feeling with dc2 is that she will stay in her cot quite a lot longer than ds did but then neither of mine are big so space is not an issue!

I moved DS at 19 months - forced to as he outgrew it.

Best decision - he's slept much better and more consistently. He's not once yet (touch wood) got out despite the fact he can. And he LOVES it - loves being able to get in by himself, loves snuggling in to it, and after story he starts chanting "bed, bed, bed" with a great big grin. Glad I made the decision when we did but I think you have to judge your own child as to what would suit them. My DS strives for independence constantly and therefore he loves his "big boy" bed but he has friends who feel more secure in a cot.

as long as he's out of it by the time he goes to school!!

We moved Ds v shortly before his 2nd birthday because he said he wanted a big bed. No issues with it whatsoever, but he has always found transitions relatively easy I think. I was pg and he knew this and told us "baby sister can have it". oh the irony - dd has never spent one night in it, firmly ensconced in our bed.

Maybe it might be easier to wait a little longer until his language skills are more developed?

My dd is 3y9m and still in her cotbed - with the sides
Is this a record do you think?

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 20:49

nope i'm sure some mners left their dc in until they were 4.

we moved ds this weekend (23 months) but that's because new baby is due in May and we wanted to make the transition with plenty of time so he forgets it was ever his bed. Ds was getting too big for the cot too so banged around a lot in the night. Only two nights so far but a lot less banging and he seems really happy in there. Got out twice the first evening but not at all the second. Is very pleased with it being a "big boy bed" too

my 2.5yo dd has been in a bed since Xmas, she loves it and has only started sleeping through since she has been in there. She never gets out, she's been told to stay in bed until we come get her in the morning, although this will have to change when she's toilet trained!
