How old was your dc when they could draw a face?

When I say 'face', I mean it in the loosest sense. Basically a sort of circle with two 'eyes', a mouth and hair, sometimes a nose and ears. Something which is recognisable as an attempt at drawing a face.

DD1 is 2.4 and is doing this, which seems really early, but not sure if it is because I don't like to ask anyone else in case I end up looking like I'm showing off.

TIA

Oh you are totally showing off!

But it does seem rather early so you are permitted.

brimfull · 14/03/2008 19:46

You must know that there will be hordes of 6m old genius artists now

Lomond · 14/03/2008 19:47

That does seem early! Can't remember exactly when DD started but think she had just started nursery so 3ish.

pootleflump · 14/03/2008 19:47

DD is 3.5 and has only recently started doing this.

StripeyMama · 14/03/2008 19:49

2 ish. I have a birthday card she made me when she was 2.2 that has a 'face' on it, bit wonk but still recognisable.

But she has inherited her dad's 'artistic temperament' - not always a good thing!

beautifuldays · 14/03/2008 19:49

my ds first did it when he was umm..about 2.8ish, think girls usually do these things before boys tho

it's really lovely isn't it? although i was miffed as ds's first 'face' was on the side of the bath with a bath crayon so i couldn't even keep it!!

LarryVeest · 14/03/2008 19:51

DD was also drawing faces when she was 2.4, and it was definitely earlier than her peers. (It was her only G+T moment, so I feel entitled to brag ). She's now 3.2 and I can;t say that the faces have improved much lol (It's a great way to keep her occupied though).

Walnutshell · 14/03/2008 19:52

Stripey, stripey, stripey. Sigh. You have just stamped on the OP's pride. Couldn't you have lied?

2 is pretty early. Not sure whether it means much but I expect I'd be boasting if it was ds (also 2 but no face-drawing as yet. But did I tell you how cutely he says "Island of Sodor"...?)

VictorianSqualor · 14/03/2008 19:59

DS still doesnt draw faces, he doesnt like them.
He is 3.4.
He has done an amazing 12 on my bedroom wall in bubble writing though

StripeyMama · 14/03/2008 20:08

Sorry

She had to inherit something from her dad! And the face was quite a lot wonk really...

liahgen · 14/03/2008 20:12

my dd can do a face and loose body. We have stick arms and legs and even hands the other day. we are never smiling, always straight line for mouth. bless her. She's 2 and half, probably been doing this for couple months. I'd have said about normal.

funnyhaha · 14/03/2008 20:14

well done little beenleigh - ds has only just started doing this just before he hit 4 (quite late, but not outrageously so, as far as I can see....)
It is super-cute

morningpaper · 14/03/2008 20:15

I'm sure this is normal, my DD draws people with faces and arms and legs and ears and hair and glasses and nipples and often breasts too and she is 2.5

I've seen some 'milestone' charts that suggest they 'start' drawing faces when they are 9 or something but I'm sure that lots of toddlers can draw a face

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 14/03/2008 20:15

DD1 was about 2.5yo, loves art and now in Year 1 (age 6) is still a better at drawing than her peers.

DS1 is 4.5yo and can't draw for toffee.

DD2 is 3yo and can do a circle with eyes and a straight line mouth but nose is often in line with eyes. She does like to give 'em a lot of hair too and sometimes they get a body with legs but no arms.

Beenleigh · 14/03/2008 20:15

lol, oh well, I thought she might be a prodigy for a bit back there. Faces very wonk here too stripey!

we always have nipples too MP

PrimulaVeris · 14/03/2008 20:26

DD age 2.5, by 3 drawing all males with willies once ds arrived, very arty in early days

Ds not until over 4, failed the HV draw a face test. HV remarked "oh I see that you work"

Ds still no good at faces, but if you want an architect-style design for a space rocket/war machine/building, he's yer boy

tigerlily1980 · 14/03/2008 20:45

My daughter could draw a face on a mega sketcher when she was 18 months (Dubious circle shape, eyes, nose, mouth) She moved on to paper a few months later and since then has just been brilliant at art and now she is 5 years old can draw whatever she sees in detail.

My husband and I (and her teachers) have been amazed at her talent, sure, I can draw a bit, but she is incredible at it!!

However, I will admit..now I have made myself sound like one of those exaggerating, boastful mummies, my son (dds twin brother) hasn't got the artistic talent of sister, and was 2 and a half before he drew a face. But being a boy, he tells her all of her drawings are rubbish anyway, so hasn't been affected by her talent!!

Wallace · 14/03/2008 21:06

I think 3 is supposed to be the average for face drawing.

Of course my children drew faces long before that

slim22 · 14/03/2008 21:10

DS around 3.5 at school with encouragement from teacher.

So if he did it spontaneously, yes, you can brag

Acinonyx · 15/03/2008 15:44

DD drew and painted faces and other things 18 mo-2 yrs and we were very excited (dh and his family are very artistic). But she hasn't drawn or painted anything except scribbles and splodges for for the last 6 months or so (now 2.8) - really doesn't seem as interested at all. Ah well. That'll teach me not to get overexcited.
