What is 'normal' speech development for a 15 month old baby?

Hi,

I'm a bit baffled by the speed my 15 month old son is learning to talk.

To be clear, this is by no means a bragging post. My 4 year old daughter has developmental delay and has only started talking very short and 'simple' sentences this year, so I genuinely don't know what the spectrum of 'normal' is.

His vocabulary is well over 40 words (keeping a list but many missing when I have forgotten to write them down). In the last week or so he's started linking two words together, like 'more please' and at the moment 'ow mummy' (he's unwell with tonsillitis).

Is this considered normal for his age? I'm not concerned, just curious because to us it feels quite advanced.

I'm probably not the right one to answer because I had one who was talking more or less in sentences at 12 months and one with speech delay.

If you have a look at the communication section of the 14 month Ages & Stages it will give you an idea of what's expected.

I would say in the normal range, but the early end of it. The spectrum of typical speech development in toddlers is enormous. Both of mine spoke early, and around 14-15 months was where I gave up keeping a list because the words were coming too fast to keep track of. We also started getting two word combinations around 15 months – the word 'more' featured prominently!
