Oli (my grandson) is very sweet-tempered and generally obliging. Over the past few months he's taken to rolling over and standing up as soon as nappy change starts. His mum has become adept at changing him whilst he's standing up. However, this past week, he has become totally unco-operative. He'll not lie still for a second and the whole poo thing gets very messy as he randomly stands up and sits down, coating everything in reach! I was out with him today and he kept moderately still when I changed him on my knee which is what I used to do with his mum and her siblings. However - my suspicion is he'll soon get wise to that. I've seen a thread about older babies who do this, but would appreciate any ideas for this little man. Many thanks.

When mine started to do that I just changed them standing up.

Which is what she does. It's only the standing up, sitting down, bottom covered in poo thing that is really difficult. Thank you though!

We found that one of those change mats that goes up at the edges discouraged the rolling (and hence standing up) plus I hand her something that is new everytime I lay her down for a change e.g. envelope, small box, keys, shoelace, clothes peg etc etc and start singing her fav songs. I also tell her I'm going to change her nappy etc so that it isn't sudddenly sprung on her.

Oh - a small handbag soze pack of tissues seems to keep them occupied for a while, as does a pack of wipes! BUT - be prepared to sacrifice some of them!

Another vote for giving them something new to play with each time - whatever is to hand - velvet jewellery cases, baby monitor, alarm clock, bracelets etc - works a treat. Failing that, a packet of wipes may do.

brilliant advice, thank you!

I found pull ups easier too when changing a standing up - and later running baby!! Found Pampers or Asda's own pull ups as good as usual nappies - bed time too.

Lie them on the floor, sit on the floor and put your feet on their shoulders...works every time. They don't like it but it's done in seconds.

Ds (now 20 months) keeps going through phases of this - I find changing him on a changing unit seems to help as he realises he can't get far (the times I have to change him on the floor are just an absolute nightmare) plus the distractions that others have mentioned.

However, he does seem to go through phases of this and then lies perfectly still for a few weeks so it may pass

I agree with the changing unit advice. DD (21 mths) is a nightmare on the floor but generally okay on the unit - a mobile above the unit has helped with her too. He might be a bit little for this, but I now give her a wipe and ask her to do her hands and face while I'm doing her botty. Um, and keeping trousers on hobbles them quite well!
