8mo crawling in her sleep... HELP PLEASE!!!!

Hi there,

My 8mo starting crawling a couple of weeks ago, but now it seems this burst of activity is not limited to the day time anymore.

She sleeps at around 7 - 7.30pm and is fine until 10.30 + when me and DH are going to sleep. From then on in she starts to craw around in her cot, still alseep mind, but doing all sorts of strange thing.

She grabs the bars on her cot to pull herself into a side sleeping position, then onto her stomach FACE DOWN with her dummy in her mouth!!!! then starts to crawl to the top of the cot, when she reaches the top her head is stuck under her neck and bum is in the air.

Throughout the night I am CONSTANTLY turning her over onto her back, and now after thinking I was over the worst of it, I am back to sleepless nights after spending the day chasing after her.

Even when we have a good night, I can't sleep 'properly' coz I'm so frightened that she'll do it again. She has good naps in the daytime. One at about 9.30 - 11 then again at 2 - 3.30. I've tried cutting it down to one nap pd so that she's more tired at night, but to no avail. she needs her day time naps.

My mother suggested that I should tie her to the bottom of the cot, but then she was never any good at giving advice that wouldn't involve a visit from Social Services. Please, has anyone else been through this, and is it time for me to stop worrying about cot death a 8 months?

Many babies sleep better like this (DS included). Can she roll from front to back? If so, I'd leave her (and get some sleep!).

Here Here, dd2 gets in all sorts of positions but we just leave her. If she gets stuck she cries and we move her and she goes straight back to sleep.

HereComeTheGirls · 14/03/2008 09:38

We were told that once they are able to roll on to their front, it is safe to leave them sleeping like that. There is no way you can stop them any way! The biggest risk from sleeping on tummy is before 6 months

lulalullabye · 14/03/2008 09:41

and the good thing is that once they can roll over, the risk of cot death is I think reduced by 75%.

Funny you should post this - I have just started finding dd (5mo) in the strangest positions in her cot and often on her face. She quite often wakes herself up by banging her head on the cot bars, so I'm going to start putting her down on her front - she sleeps better that way and she's big girl who can roll. Seriously - I know the 'back to sleep' campaign has been huge, but if your dd's getting herself onto her front, then leave her to it.

You don't need to keep turning her back onto her back (you don't have a pillow or duvet in there with her, do you?).

Habbibu · 14/03/2008 15:36

Advice from FSID website:
My baby keeps rolling onto his front. What should I do?
If your baby is less than six months old and you find him sleeping on his tummy, gently turn him onto his back. Don?t feel you need to keep getting up all night to check on this. Whatever your baby?s age, always place him to sleep on his back.

DD sleeps much better on her front too - she's now 16 mo. From about 8 months she's always slept on her front - for naps she's strapped into be pram, so does sleep on her back, but in her cot she just rolls on to her front.

This, by the way, is a fab line "My mother suggested that I should tie her to the bottom of the cot, but then she was never any good at giving advice that wouldn't involve a visit from Social Services."

nappyaddict · 14/03/2008 15:45

as long as she can roll back again just leave her be. have you tried putting her in a sleeping bag?

FirstTimerWhaleWoman · 14/03/2008 20:03

Port&Lemon- we do have a mini duvet and blanket in with her. Does this make a difference?

Habibu - it's the truth! "Tie her ankles to the bottom of the cot"... maybe it's a north african thing?

Thank you everyone for your replies. They've put my mind at ease!

Ds is a tummy sleeper, has been from very early on, I gave up! Pretty much from the word go he would tip onto his side to sleep and that has graduated to tummy. When he starting getting mobile we went through a couple of weeks of hell as he kept getting stuck in odd places in his cot and I was up several times a night just sorting him out until he worked out how to unsitick himself. These days he starts off at the foot of his cot on his back and I find him in the morning right at the top, face down and bum in air, without fail!

If she is asleep I really wouldn't bother getting up!

Fsid say babies under 12 months shouldn't have duvets cos of over heating or pillows cos they may not have the strength to lift their head clear of them. I was paranoid and would not let ds have a duvet until 18 months cos we new of a baby who died at almost 2 from cot death although i think it had a different name cos she was older than 12 months.
