How lively/active is your 7 month old?

My DS is 7 months and is VERY active, he never sits still, as soon as he is awake he wants to sqirm and move and do things. My other friends babies seem to be happy to just sit on there laps and look around while they chat, where as my DS will be trying to stand or pulling at me or sqirming or rolling over etc etc, it is so tiring and a bit like trying to hold a coiled spring - He is happy and laughs a lot while doing it. Does anyone else have an active baby like this, it is kind of worrying me a bit that he seems so active compared to friends babies.

My DD is nearly 7mnts and the same. at the moment she is in the process of swiping everything off the desk in front of her!
Even though she is a very calm baby she is always on the go. I know what you mean about the coiled spring.....esp when they spend every second trying to bounce on their legs.
DD1 was exactly the same so perfectly normal i think.

My dd now 2.9 was exactly the same at 7 months. She was a real live wire and was crawling already. I used to sometimes envy the mums who could actually drink a coffee and chat whilst their lo's sat quietly in the buggy or bouncy chair! She has turned into a very agile girl and I can only be happy for this now!

DS2, 8 months, is exactly the same! It really is like he has ants in his pants as he's all over the place. Whenever I hold him he is arching his back to see or do something else. Bathing him is a struggle as he's always twisting round or wants to stand up . Yesterday DH and I were just popping into a clothes shop and I said to him "Lets leave the buggy and just carry DS2" - What a bloody nightmare!!! Keeping hold of him was exhausting . So, yes I think its normal for some babies. Mine has just started crawling in the last few days so I'm hoping that now he has a little bit of independance he will be less squirmy.

Flynnie · 14/03/2008 09:22

Chooster. maybe less squirmy but get ready to start moving everything at his level....the mess they can cause at this stage

lulalullabye · 14/03/2008 09:27

Also chooster he will want to be on the floor the whole time be ready for him lurching out of your arms. dd2 is just starting this and in a pain in the bum !

My DS is 10mo and has always been like this - holding him is like trying to pin down a snake, and dressing him is like trying to dress an octopus. He learned to roll back to front quite quickly but still afaik has never rolled front to back - he would be lying down!! Only in the last week or so has he ever voluntarily put himself into a lying down position - crawling over to the beanbag and putting his head on it for a few seconds
We have a picture of him with 2 little female friends when they were all about 5 or 6 weeks. They are lying still and looking into the camera, he has managed to almost get himself out of the shot and is on his side trying to roll over - we joke they were talking about shoes and, being a boy, he was trying to escape
Is your ds crawling yet? life gets easier then as they no longer get so frustrated at not being able to get to where they want to be!

Chooster · 14/03/2008 09:41

How do all you owners of a squirmy baby manage to change nappies? DS2 just will not lie on his back / front long enough so it can be a bit of a military operation! . I've resorted to dangling something he wants from my mouth in front of him so he tries to reach it when changing him

StealthPolarBear · 14/03/2008 09:46

with difficulty - still working on it!
i tend to bath after 1st stinky nappy of day, normally dh home to be on pinning duty for the 2nd one!

StealthPolarBear · 14/03/2008 09:47

bath ds that is - it's not so bad that i need a bath!!

kittypower · 14/03/2008 15:35

It is so difficult to change DS nappy, today he was bascially doing a head stand with my hanging onto one leg (which was in the air) and then trying to get the nappy on with him spinning on his head - nightmare!

DS was the same - and still is at nearly 11 m/o.

He plays with inappropriate toys now when changing - nappy wipes, snappis, sudocrem, damp nappy covers, nappies (only the clean ones tho )

I do change him on the floor, sitting straddling him and occasionally use my feet to gently pin his arms down IYSWIM. At one point this was the only way to stop him squirming about. And he can stand now, so slipping off a wet only nappy and slipping on a dry one helps at times (He thinks he's so clever standing up and having his nappy changed)

Flynnie · 14/03/2008 16:36

Trying to dress a 2yr old....thats a real challange. not just squirming but all the running away and thinking that everything is a joke!
Also at 6mts plus its a good idea to give them something to hold...stops their hands wandering into the contents of the nappy

ladykay · 14/03/2008 17:13

I've got a live wire too (7 months) - if I turn him round so his heads stuck between my legs and I change his nappy like that, upside down, he can't work out (yet) how to extricate himself and I can change his nappy like he was a 4 month old again! It will work for a few weeks...

Chooster · 14/03/2008 19:19

Mmm, interesting tactic LadyKay - I'll try that one

ladykay · 14/03/2008 19:34

oh, i should say that's more for putting the nappy back on when he's just a revolving top - the taking off and wiping is still done hanging on to one leg in mid air so i can see what i'm dealing with.

ceebee74 · 14/03/2008 19:45

My DS was exactly the same as Stealth's - he learnt to roll from back to front at 4 months but never really did it the other way round - precisely because, as Stealth said, that was boring. He commando-crawled at 7 months and from then on, he has never ever stayed in one place unless he is (a) asleep or (b) we are reading a book to him!!

He is now 20 months and is just constantly on his feet running round the living room/kitchen/bedroom looking for trouble something to do - he has never ever been a baby who is happy to sit there looking around.

In fact, me and DH were having lunch in a restaurant today (on a very rare occasion without him) and there was a little girl of a similar age who was sat happily in the highchair crayonning, eating etc for the hour we were there - she never whinged, whined or moaned. Now if that was DS, within 5 minutes he would have been whinging about being trapped in the highchair and trying to find ways to escape
