Just wanted to write a post of reassurance, as I can’t tell you how many times in the past 12+ months I’ve personally searched articles on mumsnet, looking for exactly that.
My little boy has turned two today, and he literally started walking unassisted 2 hours before midnight, for the first time ever. He’s always been slow on hitting milestones and is generally a very chilled baby, totally does things on his own time and not particularly boisterous or outgoing. He was doing a variation of army crawling until 16 months before only just properly crawling on all fours, nothing physically wrong with him but not in a rush. Physio always happy with progress and advised he is hypermobile… his joints more supple so takes longer for him to build up strength for gross motor skills.
That being said, of course you always worry, feel you have to explain it to others, especially because approaching two, it is unusual for them not to be walking. Friends who had babies over a year younger than my little boy were walking before him!
After months of knee walking and hand holding walking (very shaky and obviously lacked confidence), on holiday one night he just stood up (holding on to his sleeping bag) and started walking on his own! Couldn’t believe it.
So for anyone worried and reading this in a similar situation, I really now believe it when they say… it’ll happen, they’ll get there in their own time. Hope this helps.
