Fussy eater kindergarten experiences- please share!

Is home made lunch a bad idea and better sticking with kindergarten lunch?

My son just turned 3, and just started attending kindergarten, currently going through adaptation. He is a picky eater ( possibly related to some underlying causes that could perhaps be ADHD, waiting to be evaluated in 4 months). Kindergarten is providing lunches for all kids, however there is an option to bring your own.

I think it's better for him to observe everyone else eating the same thing, instead of being served home meal ( and there is a good chance he would still not eat it). What are your experiences with fussy eater and kindergarten? Do they eventually start eating foods that they normally don't in kindergarten?

Has he actually tried the Kindergarten Lunch yet? If not, I'd give him a try with those first. DD would not eat at home, has ARFID so beyond fussy and simply would rather starve than have a food she doesn't want but happily ate at Preschool at 3. They did have a great cook and she would sometimes have 3 portions.

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto so far he stayed for lunch last 4 weeks, would sit down with all other kids, but wouldn't touch the food, apart from bread. We will try with school lunches first and see how it goes.

Honestly, if it's only been 4 days and he has eaten, he's just only eaten the bread, I'd leave it at the very least a couple of weeks to see if he's eating more.

I've replied on your other thread too, you sound very anxious about his eating. Is he following his centiles and is he meeting his milestones?

WoriedMama · 21/11/2023 06:38

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto unfortunately not meeting all milestones... Physical milestones he met very early, but the speech and desire to talk to us is very minimal and not how it supposed to be. We are on a waiting list for ADOS and ADHD evaluation.

Ok so if he's on the Pathway is there a possibility that he has ARFID?

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto I am not sure, he does like snacking on various different things, the other day he had buckwheat with chicken- because his nanny that he loves so much nicely asked him. He fake cried for a minute, but once he tried - he loved it. Mostly what I offer to him that is other than a pancake, fish fingers or something comforting that he is used to - he refuses. But with nanny sometimes he would be open to try different things

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto so here is the thing... with movies on - he eats everything I give him practically. It's when we take the tablet away, that he refuses to eat anything other than few things that he always likes.

When looking for a good early childhood education Karana make sure that it can meet your needs specially when it comes to feeding your kids. But it can also be good for your kids to be trained and disciplined to eat this way.
