Ds who is 2.5 has been refered to speech & language therapy by the HV.The thing is i wasn't worried about his talking till the HV did his check up and said he was talking very much. Now i'm not sure if i haven't noticed because of everyhing else going on.(friend with cancer and dd's health)Of course i feel really bad if there is a problem ,but i'm really not sure if there is or the HV is being over the top.He does talk but he still babbles sometimes.
How much shold he be talking do you think?
He can say things like
Where's my daddy gone?
Some more please.
Thank you/hello/bye
But i wouldn't say i could have a conversation with him.
Any advice please

my ds wasnt even doing that at that age sounds like your ds is doing fine compared to mine who is 2.10 and only just putting 3 words together no conversation at all

dont worry yourself too much imo he sounds like his doing just fine my ds was only saying single words at that age

She's 2.5 and putting 3 words together?
I know a fair amount about language development and I wouldn't say there was much to worry about there. I have known quite a few dcs who have alot less than that at 2.5.

I certainly wouldn't think about a SALT referal for quite a while yet.Def sounds like the HV is going over the top. Does he have good comprehension?

There are often long waits for SLT. If your child speech is still a problem in six months time then you will have the appointment. If you are concerned then I would ask for an appointment for audiology as well.

It is hard as a mother to judge clarity of speech. My son's speech was easy to understand, but other people had problems. My son's problem was that he could not hear properly.

I'm a salt and from what you say he sounds as if he is coming on. HVs don't know much about language development and tend to over refer (much to annoyance of SALTS).

Waiting lists shouldn't be that long any more.We are down to 12 weeks in Wales.

I'd go to appt. though,if offered.

Thanks everybody. He has an appointment on the 28th march so i will take him and see what they say.
Anybody know what happens at these sessions?
I think he has a good understanding of things .i.e. will pick things up if asked.Or found his coat ect.
Just doesn't talk has much as some do.

We have a 6 week wait from referral to initial appointment, where dd was put ont he waiting list, but then we waited 14 months for further assessment.

madmommy6 · 07/03/2008 18:58

That should say find his coat.lol
I think the main problem is he will babble like he is talking to you,but not say words. He will come to me and babble away but not make any sense. Then say the odd word like ball.

She will ask oyu some quastions (take a case history) and paly with him a good bit as the way he palys will give a very strong indication of his present lang. development. It shouldn't be stressful for either of you.

Reallytired · 07/03/2008 19:39

When my son had SLT he played games. He had no idea that he was being assessed and it wasn't stressful (for him) in any way. He loved it.
