Speech and language concerns for 23 month old

Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice.

My 23 month old son is very limited in speech. He says mama and dada and babbles but nothing coherent. He is not a great listener, won’t sit still for me to read him books and I’m just wondering if anyone else has any similar experiences to share along with any tips or tricks?

I worry constantly about it now and we have been to see his GP who isn’t too concerned but suggested a speech pathologist but with no concessions because he hasn’t been given an autism or anything like that diagnoses etc. it’s would just barely be affordable and then it’s a 6 month wait on top of that ugh!

Hes also a very fussy eater and is still breastfed three times a day but other than that points (not on cue) to things and his coordination and movement is great (put blocks together and plays with his toy trucks and holds a pencil really well!)

Hello! No speech at 23 months is delayed but not so uncommon. It is more important that he understands language and that he can communicate in some non verbal manner (eg ponting etc, shaking head no etc). Does he follows simple direction? Does he somehow answer non verbally your questions? This kind of things. For reading, with my toddler a lot helped making the reading interactive and funny. Eg. Making funny animal noises or funny faces while going through the pages. Let him bat with his hand, than foot or nose to a specific animal (or making him feed or kiss the animal/character).
