My friends dd fell and chipped her front tooth at nursey today. Dd is ok but mum is devastated. She's going to the dentist in the morning. There must be lots of toddlers out there with chipped teeth...... what happens and what can be done??

My mu tripped with DS at about the same age - he had a corner knocked off one of his front teeth. Went to the dentist the next day and they don't do anything really - they file it if it cuts them alot (DS has cut his lip on it 2 or 3 times but I don't think it's bad enough to put him through having it filed). Obviously if it's really bad, they might do something - not sure what though. Think you have to make sure it doesn't go grey... (?) But a simple chip won't really be treated. Hope that helps

My nephew unclipped himself from a shopping trolley and fell out when he was about two, knocking a couple of teeth loose and badly chipping two others.

the dentist removed the loose teeth, and th corresponding teeth on the opposite side of the mouth, but left the chipped ones alone. The reason he gave for taking out two healthy teeth was to ensure that when the big teeth came in they would do so evenly.

My DD managed to chip her lower front tooth before it was even properly out, at about 10 mo, I think she did it by grinding! I've not even thought about doing anything about it, it doesn't cut her so once the time comes to go to see a dentist I'll discuss it.

Ds knocked a top front tooth out when he was 18 months and chipped a bottom one in the process. It's very common! Chipped tooth came out at the normal time (6) and never caused any problems. Tooth that came out does not yet have the adult tooth, but ds happy because he looks 'cool' and matches older boys who are loosing their top teeth!

DS2 chipped his front tooth when he was 2, he tripped over the doorstep.
He developed an abcess there and eventually had to have it removed under a GA

Dd knocked one tooth out and broke one at age 2. Dentist decided not to do anything but just keep an eye.

If it's any consolation I broke not only my front upper milk teeth but just when my poor mother was really thrilled to see me with two new front teeth, I fell over, bashing my face on the corner of a swimming pool wall and chipped both again. One had a large edge chipped and the other slightly less, but it was significant. I don't know how but both front teeth seemed to compensate and although not absolutly flat, they look straight and I didn't ever have any dental intervention. I've even had compliments from people asking if I had braces to keep my teeth in order - I no, I never did! So there you go.

By the way - I'm now over 30 and I never once thought anything of it. And both chips were very noticable - when I look back at the photos.
