Keeping an 18m in bed

NC just incase DH decides to Google this issue.

Our 18m old can climb out of his cot so we’ve made it a bed. But my question is how do you get such a young child who hates bed to stay in bed when he can now get out so easily?

He can open doors and doesn’t like to sit and play with toys quietly so it’s not like we can just shut the door and let him get on with it … I feel it’ll be a rough few months. Any advice/ experiences appreciated

Why are you so worried about your DH finding out you’re asking a simple question?

Gro clock

Because I have previous, more personal posts that I’d prefer him not to see 😅

Stairgate on his door for safety if he can open doors, possibly an extra-high one if he's a climber. Make his room safe for him to play/rampage in unsupervised – you may find that there's a rough week or so and then the novelty wears off and he stays in bed better, at least until he's had enough sleep. He may also crash out asleep in odd corners a few times, but hopefully you can just lift him into bed once he's asleep.

If he's low sleep needs and wakes up earlier than you'd like bright-eyed and ready for the day, I'm afraid the best we could do at this age was adjust bedtime so it wasn't too intolerable a start time and then get up with ours. We did use a groclock type clock from two and a bit, but that was more to reinforce the existing 'it's not morning until X time' than to push 'morning' back much. I think it's very normal that a one or two year old is not up for long periods of quiet independent play!

My 12mo is in a single bed and has been since 10mo. I've got an extra high bed guard. Most of them are only 45cm high but mines also a climber so got an 80cm one off Amazon. He can't get out so it works. That's probably your best bet

You have just have patience with it. Yes it might be rough but he will get used to it

Then in 10 years time when they come the door with all sorts of worries from school etc you'll sigh and remember how much of a nightmare you thought him constantly getting out of bed was 😁
