Our baby is 2 and is developing a strong black country accesent. How do we stop this?

Hi everyone,

Disclaimer! I love hearing our daughter communicate and navigate through her newfound language.

We live in Birmingham and neither baby's mom nor I are from here or speak with any kind of local accent. We are by no means posh or even well-spoken, but we do not have the local accent at all.

Our little one is nearly two and her speech is amazing, however, her nursery staff are from the black country and they all speak that dialect.

She has started to say muuummay and pupay. How do we counteract this? Is this something I can mention to the nursery manager? Or do we need to go as far as moving her to a different nursery?

Move to the west country?

Will she be going to school and living in Birmingham?

Carlf · 02/10/2023 11:34

We are not to sure yet. We are considering moving further out at some point.

Nothing you can do if you are living there!
We moved to the West Midlands when I was 6, and I never picked up the accent.
My brother however was born there and has a blistering accent as a result!

I think it's unlikely moving nursery will make a difference as most of the nuersey workers will be locals!

What's wrong with a Birmingham accent?

Sonolanona · 15/10/2023 21:26

Nothing... I find it very friendly and comforting... but if you aren't from the midlands and have a less pronounced accent it does sound pretty strong! Plus there are some interesting grammatical reconstructions...

I'd certainly never heard 'Am yow alright?' before we moved there !
