How to get ds to wee on the loo before he goes to bed

He's just started going without a nappy at night and is dry all night on those occasions when he needs to wee just before bed. He's 3.4.

He's been doing really well [proud mum emoticon] although a couple of times he's not needed to go to the loo at bedtime (happy to sit there for a few minutes but says he just doesn't need to go) and it's these nights that he wets the bed. (Well it's early morning, about 5.30 ish)

We've tried lifting him before we go to bed but he's so sleepy and tired he just gets really upset at being woken and sobs and sobs and sobs. Plus the fact that if dh isn't here for some reason or another it's hard for me to do alone (I'm 22 wks pg) and even if he is, ds only wants me when he's that upset.

I've limited ds's evening drinks (nothing in the hour before bed and only a small cupful of milk at bedtime itself)- do you think it worth me encouraging him to drink something in the time preceding that hour iyswim? Have I cut back on his drinks too far to allow him to want to wee at bedtime?

Advice/experience gratefully received.

Run the tap while he's on the toilet?

Get him to try it standing up like Daddy?

Minkus · 05/03/2008 17:22

Otherside yes tried the tap one (remember that from when I was little ) and he normally does stand up, has the choice of standing or sitting really. Keep them coming liking the ideas!

You could maybe put something in the toilet that floats and make it a game to see if he can hit it?? I have no idea but it sounds like it could be fun

No more ideas. We don't have problems getting DS to pee before bed but he still needs a nappy (now 5)

Jodie, will try the "aiming" game- ds will probably really like that. Thanks.

Is is about having a little privacy when he's on the loo?

My DS who is a lot younger, is just starting to want to try the potty - but he prefers to do so without me hovering over him. Same when he's in nappies, he likes to find a quiet corner where I can't see him.

Minkus · 06/03/2008 16:41

poodlepusher thats a really good point- hadn't considered that. Will give him a bit more space tonight, thanks for idea.

do you lift or carry him to the loo before you go to bed? We find that getting DS to walk to the bathroom wakes him up enough to actually do something.

Ping pong ball down the loo.

With our little one, we read a story whilst she is on the toilet - so it is seen as a treat and not a chore. Don't know if this would work with your son, but might be worth a shot?

My DD1 (4) gets 2 stories at bed time, and if she then goes to the loo successfully she gets another bribery rewards work really well for her.
