Reflux & Colic.. confused

DS is 6 weeks old. Mild reflux which has got slightly worse lately. Doctor prescribed Omeprazole yesterday. We also have bought anti reflux milk yesterday but not started using yet. Only because I tried to change his formula before & he was sick a lot. I've also bought Colief drops.

The more I read the more I'm thinking these things may work but only for a short time. And reflux seems to be a thing that every baby has in some way but will outgrow by 3/4 months & we just have to ride it out until then. Any experienced mums care to give their opinion? I feel lost in it all & but sure what to do for the best.

If only change one thing for now, otherwise you won't know which one is effective.

So use the medication for a few days and if they're still uncomfortable, try the new formula.

Can I just ask which formula he's on now?

And has the Doctor mentioned the possibility of CMPA or Tongue Tie? Both of those have similar symptoms to reflux.

I agree with @SiouxsieSiouxStiletto , try one thing at a time so you know what does or doesn't work. The caveat on that is that I believe omeprazole can take up to a couple of weeks to be fully effective, so you would potentially need to give that one a bit longer. Are you in the UK? I thought it was unusual here to be prescribed omeprazole until you'd tried carobel/reflux formula milk and gaviscon.

In terms of whether reflux is something every baby has and just out grows, virtually every baby will posset a bit and virtually every baby will have periods where they cry inconsolably and you just can't figure out what is wrong, other than that life is overwhelming when you're new at it. DD1 did both of those things, that was fine, she was a baby, we never considered treating her for reflux (and yes, she largely outgrew the inconsolable evening crying after a couple of months).

DD2 was sick large amounts many times a day and screamed in pain for hours. (I assume your baby isn't like this, as you say mild reflux.) Omeprazole was an absolute game-changer for her, different baby within 48 hours (still sick quite a bit, but stopped the pain). She still had the odd 'witching hour', but it was a different cry.

If I were to have DC3 and deciding whether to medicate for reflux, I'd be looking at whether they were gaining weight well, whether or not they were in pain, and whether it was interfering with feeding (aversion, for example) or sleeping. If baby is a 'happy spitter', gaining weight well despite the amount of milk coming back out and not distressed, I'd probably ride it out. DD2 clearly needed medication. In the middle is harder to decide, and I think depends how sustainable things like holding baby upright for 20-30 minutes after every feed are for you, baby, and the rest of the family.

Most common causes of reflux are tongue tie and/or tension in the body.

Only an IBCLC or tongue tie practitioner can successfully identify posterior tongue ties.

I’d highly recommend seeing a cranial osteopath to release any tension/discomfort in baby’s body.

Probiotics can also help - Biogaia are a good brand, but start slowly and increase the dosage to the full amount (5 drops)

Omeprazole is fantastic, my only regret is not knowing about it sooner. My poor baby had colic and was so upset all the time (as was I) none of my NCT friends babies had it and were all enjoying cuddling their newborns.

within a few weeks of omeprazole he became such a beautiful happy boy. We were able to stop using it once we started him on solids.

I would say don’t bother faffing about with different milks, just get the omeprazole down him, he is in pain. Good luck x
