my dd1 has just turned 3 and is 108cm and well over 3 stone. she has been off the top of all those graphs (not 99.6th centile or anything daft like that.........way off the top!) since 6 months and i was wondering if she will ever slow down?!!!

everyone used to say............she will slow down soon and everyone else will catch up........but it hasnt happened yet!!

dd2 is now 20 wks old and weighs 19lb 7oz which is heading for the 99.6th centile!!! she is currently bigger than dd1 was at 20 wks which is a bit of a worry.

dd1 is perfectly in proportion now and im not really that concerned, just interested to see if she will ever slow down!!

Dd will be 7 in May, and I have just bought her a swimsuit to fit age 12. She generally wears age 11 clothes.

I'm 5'9", my dh is 6'2", his mother is (or was; she has shrunk somewhat) 6' - so dd was never going to be a tiny little thing.

My main concern is that people expect her to behave in a much more grown-up manner than she is able to, because she looks so much older. Even her teacher sometimes expects more from her as the tallest in the class, even though she is nowhere near being amongst the eldest in the class.

DD2 is 2.10 and is 104 cm but only 2st 3lb. She's going to be tall i'm sure, DH is 6'1" but i'm only 5'2". Everyone assumes she's about 4 and at school (but with poor talking - cos she is only 2).

nooka · 02/03/2008 21:25

You might want to use the word "tall" rather than huge though - most people associate tall as positive (and it is associated with higher achievement, so not a bad thing). dd loves being tall (as did I prior to secondary school) she's very pleased to be the tallest in her class (she is also the eldest). I think it's good to encourage positive self image from the start. I'm also glad that her brother is also likely to be tall (and hope she doesn't overshoot him for too long!) so she won't feel isolated about it - dh and I hope that we'll make sure she feels good about herself. I'm sure she won't be taller than her dad at least!

DiscoDizzy · 02/03/2008 21:29

yeah I always use the word tall. Everyone says, ooh she's big isn't she. To which i respond, yes she's tall for her age.

violetskies · 02/03/2008 21:44

Greedy, dd started school as the tallest in her class 3'7, she is now 13 and is 4'8 her peers are 5'3 one is 6' so don't worry they all slow down ar some point. actually that is worry she has only grown 1'1 in 8 years.

WigWamBam · 02/03/2008 21:53

I agree about the "huge" thing.

I had to correct someone yesterday ... "Oh, my little grandson is the same age as you, mini-WWB. But he's not so enormous".

She's not enormous. She's tall, that's all.

dd1 was 6lb 6 when she was born at 39 weeks

she turned into a little chubby thing til she started walking, but was off hte graphs for height

now at almost 16 she is a willowy 5ft 11, about a size ten

and gorgeous

misdee · 02/03/2008 22:05

i try to use tall as well rather than huge.

dd2 will always be the eldest in her classes, but already find people expect so much more of her than other reception children. i did dd2 hair differently the other day and as she went into the class her teacher said 'oh i thought you were a year 1 child there dd2' i laughed and said she is taller than most year 1 children.

Just remember that those great expectations of children beyond their years turn into great expectations of those same children as adults - so that they are often perceived as being more intelligent / capable / etc etc etc (whether or not that's the case!) and often get better jobs as a result... Small people (especially small women) have to fight a lot harder for the top jobs. So it really isn't all bad....

REading this thread has got me smiling. I can hear that old country song .
Goes something like this:
"Walk Tall, Walk Tall, and hold your head up high. That's what my Momma told me, when I was just knee high??"
It's a lovely happy tune, and I can just see all your lovely tall youngsters striding proudly along.

WigWamBam · 03/03/2008 14:39

That song's about someone who ended up in prison ... which may not be quite the desired effect

CarofromWton · 03/03/2008 20:47

Nice thought though Choccypig! Thanks for the kind words.

EsmeWeatherwax · 03/03/2008 21:03

My dd is way off the top of the centile charts too, 80cms at 11 months. Also hate when people call her huge or big, because I am big as well as tall. I always say yes, she is very tall for her age, but what else would she be? I love my height though, (am 6ft, dh is 6ft5)and I hope dd will be the same! I always wanted to be even taller! Up until a year or so ago I was wearing 5 inch platfors all the time... Tall women rock!
