How would a SALT assessment differ with children of different ages ???

Ds had his 2 yr development check today. All in all they were very pleased as he did most things he was asked very well.

They asked if i had any concerns and i said i was slightly concerned about his speech> They said he should know 50-60 seperate words by now, but doesn't and some of the ones he does know are unrecognisable to anyone other than me.

They have said that they will refer him for a speech assesment (also a hearing test just to check), but i was wondering what they will do with a child of that age.

Dd had one at age 4 and she was asked to point to things and then name them etc, but Ds wouldn't be able to do this and if asked to say a particular word he wouldn't (even if he could).

Anyone elses child had their speech assessed at this age ???

socci I can certainly sympathise- been there. DS1 has had an ability to play very brief (think 30 seconds) sequences of things like feeding a baby etc from age 2. He has always been more independent using things like toy brushes, irons etc (part of the hoover obsession I think), but anything else has hasn't had to just be shown he's had to be taught and rewarded at every stage. So for example to teach him to set up the train track and push the train around it his ABA therapist had to reward him with a broken choc button for each stage of the sequence - to keep him on track she still has to. Very very very hard work- and definitely comes under the heading of therapy/teaching and not play (not the way that ds2 does it at all which is just easy and a pleasure). I think part of ds1's problems is that he still finds sharing attention and adult directed attention so very difficult, if he's interested something he wants to examine it on his terms, if he's not interested he just isn't and he doesn't care that I am (whereas if I show an interest in something to ds2 then he is automatically interested - what is it, what does it do etc)

Teacher's a him mizmiz I've only spoken to him once so haven't asked him much yet. I will do though. He is very experienced though- apparently did a presentation at a recent PECS conference in London. I'm going to be a bit cheeky and once ds1 has settled into his new school and is happy there am going to ask whether he can have access to music therapist (someone does go in but its a limited service). Quite usefully his current IEP talks a lot about music and using music with him so hopefully he'll be put on the list anyway. If you're anywhere near us in RL you're very welcome to come and visit!
