23 month old DS short for age

My DS is 23 months old and after a height and weight check with the HV today (because I’ve been concerned), he measured 80.5cm tall which put him on 2nd centile, and weighed 22lbs 8oz putting him on the 9th centile for weight.

he’d never had his height measured before now so nothing to compare it to. And he’d last been weighed during my maternity leave just before he turned 1 where he was on 25th centile and where he’d been tracking since birth.

I hadn’t really noticed he was particularly short until the last few months. I started noticing how tiny he was compared to other children at toddler groups etc. then a little girl 3 months younger than him started with his childminder, and now she’s taller than him. Then I realised that the first pair of shoes we bought him when he first started walking (at 11 months old), still fit him! We’ve only bought him some more recently because he needed something for the summer, the size is the same.

the health visitor didn’t say she was concerned today. He has his 2 year check at the end of the month.

im not sure if it’s something I should be concerned about though. The HV didn’t mention the fact he was no longer tracking along the 25th centile for weight and had dropped to the 9th. He’s an ‘ok’ eater, sometimes he’ll eat great, other days he’s not fussed. He is otherwise healthy and happy. Although slow with talking, he has only just in the last month or 2 started saying 3 recognisable words.

anyone else had/have a teeny toddler and all turned out normal?

im only 5,1 but my dh is 6’ so I suppose it could be my height that he’s following, but I have 3dd with my ex who was only 5,6 and they’re all average heights.

If he has his 2 year check at the end of the month ask her to measure his head circumference, weight and height again and make sure she records them all in the Red Book. If he does have investigations later, they will need this baseline.

Also ask the HV to use the ASQ 3 to assess him. You could fill it in and take it with you. It's pretty normal for them to score grey in a could of areas but if it's more than that, insist that either she refers you or you see her again in a couple of months, max.

My DS is 16 months and about 74.5cm (which is just below the 2nd centile) and 20lbs 6oz's - I'm not concerned about him, I just imagine he'll be small or suddenly catch up a bit. As long as they're healthy and happy!

I think the problem is that the OP's DS isn't following his Centiles, which is a concern if he keeps drifting down the charts.

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto my DS hasn't followed his either, for weight or height. Born on the 98th and now the 9th for weight and I'm not too sure about height but he was on the 50th at some point.

No concerns with him by any HV or doctor!

My 2 yr old Grandson is 1st/2nd centile for height..and 60th for weight , so basically a cute cube! My son was the same and is now an average 5 ft 10, and very skinny adult!
They can change a lot as they grow :)
