18month DD only saying 1 or 2 words..should I be worried??

My DD has only started saying the odd word or two but that's it. She tends to come over to me and tug at my arm if she wants to show me something or point and make noises until I realise what it is she wants help with.

She rarely says mamma or dadda, that happens only when she sees photos of us. She'll point if she sees a cat and says 'cat, cat'. What is the 'norm' for this age and should I be concerned??

dd- had about 3 words at 18mths, now at 19.5mths she has about 50 or so and more everyday!

ds- had hundreds and was practically conversational at that age.

They are all different but it all pans out in the end.

Hee hee, yes, it didn't actually take forty years to even out, just to make that absolutely clear! More like four!

And yes, they do seem to concentrate on one thing and then catch up later with others. DD is nearly 18 months and probably knows a hundred words that she uses spontaneously. OTOH, she thinks she's climbing if she stands on a book less than an inch thick while other kids of the same age are up and down onto sofas etc really confidently.

I took my DD to our GP for the same reason - also 18 months. She only says park, our dogs name and will also say no,no,no,no! . I have a DS being assessed for ASD so I am a bit paranoid I suppose. She told me that the only time to worry would be if she didnt understand what YOU are saying to HER. I can ask DD where my mobile phone is and she will go and find it for me wherever it may be so I have stopped worrying.

Tom will be 23 months next week and only says 'up'. He'll do the odd 'bababa' 'mamama' & 'dadada'. I bought the Babytalk book a few weeks ago but haven't managed to sit down for our half hour quiet playtime together yet! And him teething doesn't help!

I just came looking for a thread as I have been wondering if I should worry about DS - he's 15 months and says DA for everything...
He doesn't go and get things for me but I'm not sure how often I actually ask...will practice this weekend.

He developed his own sign for drink of water and varies it for milk.

He has learnt actions to songs being sung to him at nursery (and I really need to look up verse 2 to 'miss polly had a dolly' - he's getting cross with me) and in order to get me to sing it he cradles his arms and rocks. (Very cute)

He recognises shoes, socks, mobile (obsessed), keys, ta but seems to be completely ignorant to mummy and daddy. The dog gets a special two-tone da-da (her name is susie so guess he's copying the syllables?)

He's in the baby unit at nursery still coz he's only just learnt to walk, he learnt to crawl at 5 months though. I'm wondering if his language will improve when he goes down to toddlers with older kids who are talking?

All this sounds OK, doesn't it?

Sounds fine - much like the daughter of a speech therapist friend of mine - "Da" drove her mad for a while, but she's had a massive developmental spurt - just before she was 2, if I recall correctly - and is now saying loads in 2 languages (her Dad is Dutch). I think that at this age it's really not worth worrying - they just do things at their own pace.
