My 8yr old DS has a severe sensory aversion to, amongst other things, anything creamy or gloopy in texture. This means that he hates cream, baked beans, bechamel sauce etc. He dislikes playing in mud. Doesn't like 'toy' slime.
The main problem, though, is that he loathes sun cream. It's an absolute battle to get it on him and there's no way he'd ever apply it on himself. It's becoming a real issue and I'm at my wits' end trying to get him to appreciate the importance of protecting himself from the sun. As he gets older and he has longer periods away from me, and as teachers and summer camp leaders generally refuse to apply suncream to a child, I'm finding it all much harder to navigate. I've tried the more 'watery' sun blocks but he can't stand these either. The 'spray on' sun blocks - I think you have to rub these on as well, once you've sprayed it on.
It clearly distresses him to have sunblock applied.
I don't know what to do.
Does anyone have any success stories about getting their children to overcome a sensory aversion? Any advice/tips?
Thanks
