3.5 year old physical development - should I be worried?

My son will be 4 in 3 months and he can’t:

  • ride a scooter at all
  • ride a balance bike at all
  • climb anything
  • take clothes off (recently starting pulling trousers down to his ankles in an attempt to get them off)
  • put any clothes on (has put on a pair of shorts a few times, shoes maybe 5 times)
  • always needs help going to the toilet

Nursery haven’t mentioned anything. He is of a very slight build compared to his peers and doesn’t have a big appetite. He also doesn’t seem remotely interested in any of the above. His older sister was physically advanced in comparison.

Should I be concerned and if so, what should I do???

Oh no, you must be very concerned. How was he at his 2 year check? I'd suggest you contact your GP and or HV. How long has he been going to nursery? Speak to his key worker because they should have been proactive and raised it with you.

He would be noticeably behind most of the 3-4 year olds I know. What does he do at a play park or soft play? Can he run well, changing direction with reasonable control, like in a game of tig/tag? Jump, balance (very briefly) on one foot, throw a ball, kick a ball?

I'd be inclined to have a chat with his key worker and then probably either GP or HV. It might be nothing more than a lack of inclination, but even then, it would probably be good to get some ideas to encourage gross motor activities so he develops his strength and coordination.

I think it sounds as though he might need some support and assessing as to why he's a little behind.

Ciujd you call the HV and tell her your concerns and ask her to do the Ages & Stages assessment?

Sounds like he might need Portage and maybe physio as well as an assessment by a Paediatrician.
