18mo behaviour worrying me

So essentially the behaviour in question is non-stop rocking on all fours, accompanied by constant humming, for HOURS each day.
Like the kind of rocking babies do before learning to crawl.
He can crawl, he can't walk yet or talk, can't wave or clap, can't communicate anything in any way unfortunately. But that's a whole other story. Anyway, this rocking is concerning me more so because it's every single day, for hours, sometimes lasting 30-40 mins at a time. And no one can tell me why he is doing it. Does anyone have experience with this?
I am sick of all the comments by other mums when we go out. One even said 'oh, that's so strange, why is he doing that?'
AGHHHH. I don't KNOW.

I think you do have some things that need checking out.

According to the NHS if they are t walking by 18 months you need to see the GP or your HV. Does he bear weight if you hold his hands?

I'd also ask the HV to do the Ages & Stages Assessment. Don't worry if he doesn't pass every section, they're not meant to but it is a useful tool to see if he needs some additional support, like SLaT and Portage.

Has he had a hearing test too? If he's not had one since both I'd ask the HV to refer him for that to mainly because a Speech & Language Therapist will want him to have had that checked before seeing them.

Hope you get to see your HV soon x

Hi @SiouxsieSiouxStiletto
I'm not too bad today, thank you ☺️. I have actually just had the HV come for his 18 month checkup last week, she didnt really have any answers to my questions but instead referred him to different places like pediatrics, speech and language therapy etc. He is also starting a crèche for children with suspected disabilities in September, which is something he was referred for a few months ago by an ALN key worker (who got in touch with us after our HV referred him).
Hearing test shouldn't be long now.
It's horrible seeing these kind of repetitive behaviours and not knowing how to help him. Even he seems fed up of doing it. Its like a trance he can't break out of.
I am so worried for the future and what he will be like. As long as he's happy though thats all that matters.

It's really good that he's been referred already. The waiting lists can be long but it sounds as though he'll be assessed before starting school.

The he SN Children Section is good on MN. They can help you with the assessment process and talk to you about how you're feeling about the future. It's totally normal to feel some grief Flowers

@mumstressoutmum hi I wondered if you had an update on your child's humming? My daughter has been doing the same

mumstressoutmum · 08/10/2023 18:59

hello @Macky8828
the humming and rocking continues, he's since been diagnosed with Global developmental delay and is being assessed for Autism.
But if it is just humming, with no other symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much as I'm sure it can be perfectly normal. x
