My 8 month old can sit unaided & has a cot bumper but I read that they should only be used until they can sit unaided. Why is this ?

I think the concern is that the baby can get tangled up in them and suffocate! The ties are risky too. That said my dd still has one in her cot and she is 22 months...

I was under the impression you should only use them once they were older as when they are young they could wriggle under the bumper but mot be able to get themselves out?

Having said that I have used one from start to finish with all of mine!

This is what the sids website says:

"In the past, there were concerns that bumpers might make babies too hot, increasing the risk of cot death. However, recent research has shown that they have neither good nor bad effects. Take it out when your baby can get up on hands and knees so they can’t climb out".

WWB - now I am imagining a baby using the cot bumper like a row of knotted sheets, to gain an exit from the cot!!!!

My ds is nearly a yearnow and I think he needs a cot bumper more than ever before as he keeps hitting his head on the top of the cot. He does it in his sleep and wakes him self up. He's such a wriggler!

I was very close to buying one in the summer as DD (then 7mths) would jam various limbs through the bars and wake up howling. Luckily she grew out of it, and now it is colder is bag in the trusty gro-bag and snug as a bug!
