4 month old trying to stand all the time

Hi my Ds is 17 weeks and is trying to stand up all the time - he is prety good at it and can support himself pretty well on his legs for a minute or two (and giggles with joy when he does). I am just a bit worried that he is too young for this and might hurt his hips. Is this normal?

My DD was always strong on her legs but i wouldn't be too keen to encourage him to stand fully unsupported at that age but using the strength of his legs is fine iyswim.

DS was pushing himself up on his legs from pretty early on and loved doing so - I can;t see there's any problem if you're not forcing him

My ds did this from early on - I think it is fine as long as you hold on to him while he does it! It is more of a reflex than an attempt to stand/walk at that age. Having said that ds did crawl very early at 7 mths and was walking at 10 mths, so you could just have an energetic lad on your hands...

belgo · 22/02/2008 16:42

Let him do it if he wants. My dd1 was doing it from 12 weeks, I got rather unfairly told off about it by a baby yoga teacher, but you obviously cannot force a 12 week old to 'stand' unless they want to do it and are able to do it. BTW, dd1 was walking unaided by 10 months.

phlossie · 22/02/2008 16:42

Funny you should say that - I was just telling my dd (20 weeks) that she needs to learn to sit before she can walk! She also loves standing. I hadn't thought anything of it, but she was standing at a baby massage class last month (so less than 17 weeks) and the hv saw and said that was fine so long as I took most of her weight.
Have you got one of those doorway bouncer things? My dd adores it!

EffiePerine · 22/02/2008 16:43

(yes, DS was crawling by 8 months and walking by 11 - just a word of warning )

Mum1369 · 22/02/2008 16:44

My DS is 5 mnths and has also been doing this for a while (my DS1 also did this too) Neither of them were very good at pulling themselves up (when lying on their fronts) though.
I don't think it does any harm, in fact if you sit on the floor with you legs out in front of you, sit him on your leg (with a leg either side) and let him lift himself up - with his feet and knees in line with each other - it's supposed to actually be good for the hips. Not an expert though !

Hi Nismy
My DS (now 20 weeks) has been pushing himself up to standing for ages now - at least since he was 16 weeks. In fact, when he's sitting on our laps facing us he won't sit still and tries to stand all the time - he just loves clambering all over us!

bubblagirl · 22/02/2008 16:59

my ds was in baby walker at this age as couldnt get him to sit down

his feet were on the ground firmly as luckily my baby walker went really low

he loved it was so much happier on the move

or he was in door bouncer but loved his walker the most

Do you mean when they push down with their legs to "stand" and you've got hold of their waists? Is this a problem? My DD does it and she's 5 weeks old - she's been doing it for a while; the doctor commented on it when we left hospital but didn't say it was a problem...

tigermeow · 22/02/2008 21:17

We used to find DD standing in her cot at 3.5months old ...we lowered the cot then. She was standing from 3weeks old, pulling to a stand at 3.5months (she'd hold onto the cot bars and lever herself up), walking well by 8months. I saw my HV about the early standing, but DD wanted to do it, we couldnt stop her, especially when she was pulling up.
If they are strong enough then you cant really do anything to stop them. DD (nearly 3yr) has very straight legs now and no joint problems.
DD would have loved a door bouncer, they just didn't fit in our door frames.

DD2 does this, she holds onto the sofa & stands up but hasn't got enough balance to stand by herself. She's been doing this since about 12 weeks, like the OP ds giggles with joy! I've asked dr etc. and don't have a clear answer as to wether it's bad for her or not

colditz · 23/02/2008 15:45

Ds1 was like this - I have a photo of him at 4 months, pleased as punch, holding my hand. He still didn't walk until 14 months though!

Nemoandthefishes · 23/02/2008 15:46

DS and DD2 both pushed up on their legs from a very early age and enjoyed being in one of those door bouncers. They both walked unaided at 8mths old.
