DS 20 months and not talking

Hi ds still not talking - only has about four words. Am trying not to get silly and worried about it, but hard when all his toddler group are chatting away with extensive vocabularies! He does understand what you say and will respond to direction well and babbles constantly but hardly any recognisable words. Shall I just quit worrying and stop being so stupid?

none of mine spoke much until they were over 2. Now they don't stop. I know how you feel as all the similar age toddlers were chatting away long before mine but they soon catch up and if he understands you well I dont think you should be worrying. I have trouble getting mine to be quiet now!

My son is/was the same. He is now having speech therapy (which sounds a lot worse than it is!!) and he is doing well now. He is 2.5yo and still only has about 20 words but is making "converstion" in other ways ie pointing and showing us and new words are coming all the time now. If I were you I'd mention it to someone, hv or gp perhaps, as the help we've been given is having a big affect on my lo!!

Don't worry about it. My ds didn't speak until after he was two. He didn't even babble. Was just silent. Now at 5 he's fine.

Give it till after he is two and then speak to your HV or GP if you are till worried.

Thanks for your responses - I might have a chat with the health visitor. My two step sons are real witterers and it's brilliant! Just want my ds to be able to speak to them too!

Ds was 3 before he talked - but then, so (apparently) was I.

he did talk fluent Serbo-Coration or soemthing of that ilk - just nothing that we could understadn!

He said "Cat", "Mum" and "Dad" early on (at about 12 months) - and then seemed to lose them in favour of the aforesaid Serbocroation.

He si now 7 and has a wide vocabulary.

If he has other children around he may just "use" them to speak for him. I am also guilty of knowing what my ds wants and so just giving it to him without waiting for him to ask!!! I also think there is a lot in the saying that boys are lazy!! I'm sure both your ds and mine will be chattering away soon!!

He may well be a sentance speaker and just storing up his passive vocabulary until he is ready. Don't worry, it will happen, especially as you say he understands everything you're saying already.
