Is it normal for my son to be grossed out by these things?

My 5 year old has such an aversion to food sometimes. He eats the same 5/6 meals (which is honestly fine but gets boring for the rest of us having to have those meals). I try a few times a month to get him to try something new but he despises the texture of things. He literally spits things out because he can’t stand it that much. He says he hates the way things feel on his tongue eg rice, watermelon, strawberries, his bananas have to be a certain amount of ripeness or he won’t even entertain them
He is also quite funny about “germs”, he doesn’t like me to kiss his lips specifically (which, again, is fine and I would never do it if he didn’t want me to) or sometimes even any of his face because “we don’t have the same germs” and I notice when others hug him it’s like he things it’s gross.
I can see him visibly cringe when it’s time to brush his teeth and he really doesn’t want to put the toothbrush in his mouth
I’m sure there are more examples if I were to think hard enough but how normal is this behaviour?

He does sound a bit like my DD who has ARFID. Has anyone ever mentioned the possibility of that to you?

Could the toothbrush img be the really strong flavour of the toothpaste? Have you tried him with a tasteless toothpaste?

I’ve never even heard of that actually, thank you for mentioning it to me! If you don’t mind me asking, does your DD absolutely demolish the food she does like? Or is it a sort of across the board thing? That’s the thing that’s always put me at ease is he loves the food he does like, although if he has it somewhere else or at school he is more hesitant to eat it even if it’s the same meal.
I’ll have to look for some flavourless toothpaste and see if that makes a difference, thank you again

Oh my goodness, I have no idea what happened there Blush

So yes she does enjoy her "safe foods" and yes she's really hesitate to try things that he's had elsewhere in case it's "different".

Have you had the chance to read up on ARFID yet?
