My 2 week old has terrible congestion/snorting - your help needed!

Since she was born my DD has been snuffling and snorting badly. It sounds as though she has a terrible cold but she doesn't - she's had a few bogeys but no runny nose. I've asked the midwife and the health visitor and they suggested saline drops, which don't make much of a difference. It's worse at night although I've raised the end of her moses basket up - she wakes herself and me up several times a night snorting and almost struggling for breath, and bright red. It's quite scary. However, she can feed without a problem, so she clearly can breathe through her nose. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks

Hi my son is the same and has been since birth and is now 6 weeks.
While we where in hospital they used saline drops and they worked quite well.
Now at home we dont use anything as i dont have anything, and we get quite alot of bogeys now aswell.
I have found a cooler room helps and putting a bowl of water in the room to add moisture to the air so at least they dont crust up.
The other thing we tried when he is really bad is a few drops of Olbas oil in a bowl of boiling water, this really helps, we just had it on the bed side table one morning when he was in bed with us ( weekend and chilling )!!

I could be entirely wrong about this but I think it's pretty much normal.

Or to put it another way, this is exactly what DD did when she was this age. It sounds really loud and really like they're really struggling for breath and I actually phoned the emergency health visitor twice because we were really concerned! HV said very little of any use and said not to be concerned (gosh, big surprise, unhelpful HV, pope is catholic shocker) but it just seemed to sort itself out as she got a little older. The reason I think it's normal is that some close friends had a kid about 4 months after us and phoned us one evening panicking about exactly the same thing - theirs also just went away.

If she doesn't have a temperature/ difficulty feeding/ difficulty breathing during the day then I suspect this may be simply what it is...

DS used to make an awful lots of noise at this age. I think it is normal tbh.

I think most babies are like this? I know both of mine were. My DD in particular, I panicked and took her to hospital one night when she was 3 weeks old only to be told she had a "bit of a cold". My DS was so snuffly we moved him into his own room at 4 weeks just to get a peaceful sleep! You can get albas oil drops for babies but not sure if its only for over 3 months?

My ds was the same for about 10 weeks. I kept phoning the midwives at the hospital for the first few days as I was convinced he was dying! (always the drama queen!) I was assured it was normal for newborns to have mucus in their respiratory system and can last for three months. I again asked my health visitor after about a month and she said to do exactly what you are doing by propping him up a bit at night. She also reccommended that we run the shower really hot and fill the bathroom with steam, take him in there for a few minutes before bed and it should help. We didn't notice that it helped but it might do for you!

Again my ds was exactly the same. He is now 3 months and still sounds conjested. He also sneezes a lot. I guess they can't blow their noses like we can!!

my ds was a very mucusy baby it did clear up i used to sit in steamed bathroom before popping to bed and just making sure room was well ventilated if heating on window slightly open

raising end of moses basket we did this also but does sound normal

my ds had lots of mucus when born and did take along time to clear but steaming did help

having exactly the same problem at the moment with my 7 week old. Just discovered that using a dummy at night really helps something to do with the sucking makes them breathe a little easier. I use the saline drops just before feeding and these help in the short term....

Funny, we only seem to have the snuffly nose problem at night :-)

Same here, though I can add that it is apparently more common with c-section babies as the mucus don't get forced out as would be with a normal birth. If I remember correctly it stopped around 8-10 weeks. Same advice, elevate head, I also put ds down on his side, (big no I know) but we used rolled towels to put behind his back and in front to stop him from rolling over, and we switched sides after every feed.
