My 3 yo ds has been itching and whilst I did cursory checks for infestation I never got a comb. Then last night, I had another look and... oh my goad... in a taxi staight down to tescos, spending money I can ill afford on the taxi but no choice really as it was 6.30pm and there was no way I could send him to bed like that! I finally put him in bed at 9ish and then set about my own hair. It was pretty long and not in very good condition so I had to lop a lot of it off to get the comb through. Handily enough there's a posh hairdressers who had a training session this morning, so they rescued what I had left
I must admit to feeling like a terrible mother. I know that nits are part of growing up nowadays but
I'm almost afraid to ask, but am I terrible? I know we are the 1st in our circle to get them and now I'll be fastidious about checking every week, but I do feel like I've let him down.

don't be daft

most kids get them at some point - first time DD got them I didn't realise for AGES

Blandmum · 19/02/2008 16:26

dear god, they all get them!

Don't beat yourself up about it

I doubt this will be the last time. Its just one of those things

cluckyagain · 19/02/2008 16:26

OOOhh - bad mother, bad mother. NOT. Don't be daft - they get them, end of story. Have a drink and forget about it!!

JackieNo · 19/02/2008 16:27

No, not terrible at all. They're no fun though. Easier on a DS than a DD, though, as generally shorter hair.

You guys are so quick!
Thank you for reassurances... I know, logically you are right. Maybe I just need to recover from the heebeegeebees and then I'll feel better lol
I also reckon I've paid a price by cutting my hair, kind of like an instant karma

Don't forget to wash the bedding and re-treat hair in a weeks time!!!!!!!

missymoo3 · 20/02/2008 20:53

Dont Panic I am an expert on Nits as i have a daughter with very long hair. Recommend cheap own brand conditioner and a comb every other day and it breaks the hatching laying cycle. Keeping doing it until you get none on two occasions and then re-do in a weeks time. Chemical free and you can check his and your hair every now then just to reassure.

dingdong05 · 20/02/2008 23:50

Thanks missymoo3, and chubbymummy. I got lyceclear as its ment to be non chemical, but I'll try the conditioner trick next time (oh, man...) and I think I'll have to invest in this super duper nit comb a friend of mine just got- its that mega fine, 100% success comb, as the one I got in the pack let the teeny tiny bits through
I'll change the bedding tommoro and again the night of the 2nd dose.
Feeling the itch aagin, though I'm not sure how much is psychosematic, and I still have to wait til Monday!
I do like my new hair though lol

Pofacedandarrogant · 21/02/2008 00:40

Woe is me, moving house tomorrow and just spotted DD3 has lice, thens DD2 aged 13 casually mentions that she has a letter for me about headlice in year 8 and 0h yes she has an itchy head and very long very thick hair.
So have done the nitcheck and yes-DD2 is riddled and how the heck am I ever gonna get her clear without beaucoup de chemicals????????????
It's not supposed to happen to teenagers is it?????????????????

dingdong05 · 21/02/2008 14:46

I'm def going to get the nitty gritty comb, the plastic one I have is pretty fine, but not fine enough, and no where near as fine as the nitty gritty comb. Hopefully it means I'll never need to get any more of those treatments the next time...
Oh, poface, you have my sympathies, I guess age is no barrier, as I'm 36 and got them! Maybe the bright side is you can bribe dd2 to sit still long enough The favourite treatment seems to be the nitty gritty comb and cheap conditioner to provide the slick so it can get through the hair.... but how fabulous for you all, 1st night in a new house and you all get de-loused! lol Good luck with it!

moondog - I've got a nittygritty, was suprised it even went through my dd's afro with out too much pain.

Our local pharmacy stocks a range of non chemical nit lotions and potions.
