The Toys That Have Kept On Giving

Do your DC's have certain toys that have just stood the test of time, worth every penny you paid for them and become much loved and returned to favourites, long after you expected your DC(s) to have tired of them?

My DD 2.6 has played, every night, with her bath time teletubbies and house since she was about 9 months old. She hasn't watched the programme for over a year...She keeps finding new and ingenious ways to develop her play with them, and I'm just astounded by the value for money they have proved to be.

Marble run by ELC
Megabloks

DS aged six still plays with them four years on

avenanap · 18/02/2008 21:04

Lego. I hate the bloody stuff but my ds has been playing with it for over 4 years now and there are no signs of anything taking over.

somersetmum · 18/02/2008 21:05

Wooden train set, bought for ds aged 2 (now 10) and still played with by dd aged 5. Nothing fancy, the one from Tesco.

ArmadilloDaMan · 18/02/2008 21:05

Shopping till

I am quite possibly the best shopkeeper ever

bran · 18/02/2008 21:12

A toy garage and about a million small cars. DS plays with the garage pretty much every day.

He's also had great value out of plastic food, he goes shopping and has picnics for his toys.

A baby doll, it doesn't get played with every day but he's played with it regularly since he was a year old (now 3.8 yrs). Really good for emotional development IMO, as he comforts the baby and gives emotions to her (ie she's crying because she wants her mummy), but also cares for her, puts her to bed etc.

A cheap water pistol that came in a party bag - he loves guns and weapons.

Happy Street - ELC first bought when dd1 was 18months and she was playing with it today aged 8!!!!

choccypig · 18/02/2008 21:16

A second vote for ELC marble run, DS had it at 3, and is now 7..and still loves it. Large size lego, aka Duplo. We have got vast quantities of the basic bricks, and he and his friends build fantasy footballers houses.. with swimming pools, dog kennels, football pitch, extra bathroom, etc..
Its a boys version of a dolls house.

Nemoandthefishes · 18/02/2008 21:17

ds 1 had a wooden train track for his first birthday. he's 8 now and all 3 kids play with it almost daily.

lego

£3 asda dolls buggy...dd and ds2 play with it all the time and push eachother round in it!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 29/03/2009 10:53

Well it's early days but I think his pretend teaset might end up as one of these, he looooves it! Likes having it in the bath too (and yes, we have kept the box for it as well!).

Also possibly Horsey, his rocking horse from Freecycle - it is quite big so it will be a long time before he can get on or ride it on his own, but I think as he gets bigger and can clamber on himself, that might keep up the interest.

compo · 29/03/2009 10:54

plastic tea set we got ds when he was 1
he still plays with it at 5 and dd (2) loves it as well
